  • Peaceful site in the southern Ardèche five minutes' drive from Viviers
  • On an 18th-century property 50 minutes' drive from famous Pont D'Arc
  • Table tennis and pétanque on site; supermarket 10 minutes' drive
Got a penchant for peaceful sites set among oodles of greenery? Say hello to Camping Rochecondrie in the southern Ardèche, on a protected area spanning more than three hectares. It's only a five-minute drive away from the medieval walled city of Viviers, and as another plus, it has adorable dwarf goats on site. Set in the ravishing Rhône valley between the Drôme and Ardèche departments, and within 50 minutes’ drive of the big-on-Instagram natural stone Pont D'Arc, Camping Rochecondrie is well placed for adventures in the countryside. When you’re not gadding about, the park’s on an 18th-century property full of centenarian trees for shade and snoozes. Sporty facilities include a pool and paddling pool (open during high season only), as well as table tennis and pétanque. Kids’ games are organised in the warmer months to keep the younger ones busy while adults can listen to music. Camping Rochecondrie has a bar and terrace (open during high season only) for lingering over meals and drinks in true continental style, and takeaway pizza nights are organised several times a week if it’s an evening off from cooking you want. Fresh bread is delivered regularly, making planning what to have for breakfast easier, and a supermarket’s less than a 10-minute drive for all those other must-have provisions (ie, wine and cheese).

Local attractions

Viviers, in a pretty position on the right bank of the Rhône, is a five-minute drive from Camping Rochecondrie. The cathedral’s worth a look while you’re here and athletic types can go rowing on the river with the help of the Aviron Viviers Montélimar Châteauneuf club. Llamas not exotic enough for you? Try the Crocodile Farm in Allée de Beauplan, a 20-minute journey from the park, to see more than 400 of these reptiles (not to mention giant tortoises) inside a tropical greenhouse. Montélimar, a town known for its nougat, is also reachable in 20 minutes if you’re a fan of the sweet stuff; the Arnaud Soubeyran museum and factory will school you on its history during a tour round the machinery. On your jollies in July? Try not to miss Alba-la-Romaine's circus festival, made up of acrobatics, clown performances and more, which you can reach within 15 minutes from the site. For a glimpse of how the other half lived, head on a half-hour journey to see the art collection at Renaissance-era Château de Grignan. It sits on a rocky outcrop with views out over green valleys, so it’s worth the trip for the pics alone. To go further back in time, the Paleolithic paintings at Chauvet cave are a 50-minute drive away.
