  • River canyoning and Grotte Chauvet 2 - Ardèche both 45 minutes’ drive
  • Timber lodges with barbecues in private gardens; pool and play area
When you’re looking to dodge the crowds that flock to the well-trodden Ardèche tourist haunts, escape to Chalets d’Arbres, a peaceful hideaway set at 500 metres, tucked among greenery and backed by forested hills. It’s five minutes’ drive from the tiny Rhône-Alpes village of Darbres, and accommodation is in eco-friendly timber-framed chalets sleeping up to eight guests, each with kitchens, open-plan living space and ensuite shower rooms. Moving outside, all the units have covered decking with a picnic table and chairs, a barbecue and a small private garden planted with wild flowers – just the place to reset surrounded by nature. Sustainability is a big issue at this site, which features natural waste water treatment, solar panels and compost bins to help preserve the spectacular Ardèche landscapes. A playground sits under the shade of trees, and other amenities include a heated pool and woodfired hot tub. To taste local produce, a 10-minute stroll takes you to the local farm to buy goat’s cheese, and you can pick up other regional goodies at the Monday evening market in Darbres, which kicks off at 5.30pm and ends with live music. If you want to enjoy your holiday right up to the last minute, there’s an end-of-stay cleaning service available for an extra cost. The site owners are happy to advise on sightseeing trips too.

Local attractions

The Ardèche region is a paradise for active bods. You can get out on biking and hiking routes – and swim in the Auzon River – straight from the site, and for something a bit more hardcore, go canyoning along the Gorges de la Besorgues (45 minutes’ drive). Other sporty ideas for family days out include the zipwires and via ferrata climbing routes at the Entertainment Adventure Camp (45 minutes), and you can test your fitness levels on obstacle courses at Accroche Toi Aux Branches in Jaujac (40 minutes). There’s an abundance of caves to explore locally, all with a profusion of limestone stalactites and stalagmites. The caverns at Grotte Chauvet 2 - Ardèche (45 minutes) showcase replica cave paintings from Neolithic times, and the Grotte de la Madeleine (an hour) features a spectacular sound-and-light show among its bizarre, millennia-old rock formations. Kids will love the dinosaur trail at Aven Marzal (an hour), where you can book guided tours on steep paths through caverns. If you have younger offspring, test their brain power to escape the giant wooden maze at Parc de Loisirs Mad Maze (50 minutes), or take them to cuddle the friendly donkeys at Parc Animalier de Lussas petting zoo (10 minutes).
