It's free, quick and easy!
- Luxurious site in the grounds of a 16th-century farmhouse
- A 10-minute drive from Tarascon; half an hour from Avignon
- Outdoor pool, exercise room, laundry room, playground and restaurant
Most travellers passing through Camping Saint Gabriel a couple of hundred years ago wouldn't have had much time to admire the views (and more's the pity, for the vistas around here are quite the sight). Folk would have stopped off at this former coach house in Provence for a quick bit of grog and grub or to hit the hay before carrying on to their far-flung destinations (perhaps dropping into the Chapelle Saint Gabriel over the road to secure divine favour for the rest of the journey).
One of the best things about this park is that there's still heritage all around, ranging from a 16th-century farmhouse to a cracking display of classic motorbikes. But while none of its historic flavour has been lost, it's worth pointing out that Camping Saint Gabriel has benefitted from a few modern additions over the years that make it rather more luxurious than it was in days past. Mod cons here include an outdoor pool, a play area, a handy laundry room, a modern bar and an exercise room, as well as a restaurant that's open from late spring to early autumn.
When you venture away from site, you’ll likely want to start with a trip to Tarascon (10 minutes' drive), a pretty town on the river Rhône with a tourist office, mainline railway station and all the usual supermarket amenities.

Local attractions
If there's one thing Provence does particularly well (and, truth be told, there's a whole bunch of things…) it's parties. Nearby Tarascon (10 minutes' drive) happens to host quite a lot of them throughout the year, including folklore gigs, carnivals, equestrian shows and bullfighting bonanzas. (This last one is controversial, but it's worth noting that the local variety, known as 'course camarguaise', never ends with the bull being killed.) Check the tourist office to see what’s on during your stay.
Camping Saint Gabriel is also on the edge of the Alpilles Regional Nature Park, a hilly massif where there's an awful lot to keep walkers, cyclists and horse riders busy. If the kids in your gang are liable to get tired out by cross-country treks, more family-friendly options include the well-preserved Roman relics on show at Glanum archeological site (20 minutes) or the Carrières de Lumière (10 minutes), a former quarry that's become the unlikely backdrop for one of southern France's most spectacular light shows.
Keen on castles? Check out Tarascon (10 minutes), Beaucaire (15 minutes) and Châteaurenard (20 minutes), without forgetting Avignon and its absolutely enormous Palais des Papes (30 minutes).
