Plenty of space
Large caravan

  • Peaceful riverside site just outside Saint-Pierre-de-Maillé
  • A 20-minute drive from the thermal spas of La Roche-Posay
  • Bike and canoe rental available on site
If you’re one of those (sensible) types who fancies a peaceful rural retreat but still wants to be within easy ambling distance of restaurants, shops and the like, sort yourself a stay at Vienne's Camping Le Grand Pré. The peace and quiet part of the equation comes to you courtesy of the setting, between ancient cliffs and the Gartempe river; meanwhile, a 10-minute stroll from the site is the little village of Saint-Pierre-de-Maillé, home to a restaurant, café and grocery store plus the obligatory bakery. Should you require further urban amenities, there are more restaurants (along with some scenic woods and river views) in Angles-sur-l’Anglin, 10 minutes away by car. A bit further afield, it's around 20 minutes' drive to historic wanderings through the medieval streets of Chauvigny or warm-water wallowing at the famed thermal baths in La Roche-Posay. Or get prepped to get climbing: Le Grand Pré is 10 minutes' drive from the popular rock climbing site of La Guignoterie. Facilities on site are kept to a minimum to maintain the peaceful vibe, but there's plenty of space for the small sorts to run about, and various useful amenities to make life easy: bike hire, canoe hire, a barbecue area and a small shop.

Electric optional grass touring pitch

Liked: Delightful campsite in a beautiful location with absolutely spotless facilities, toilets and showers were immaculate and toilets actually had seats ( quite rare in France)! Plenty of hot water for showering and washing up. Campsite has a lovely cafe and shop with amazing coffee. We booked last minute and arrived very late, the lovely receptionist/owner went out of her way to find us somewhere open for us to get pizza. Will definitely be back next year.

Electric optional grass touring pitch

Liked: The space and relaxed atmosphere. We were able to pick our own pitch and found a lovely spot that suited us. The facilities were very clean. Lots of space for little ones to run around. Access to water activities - we went for an afternoon family canoe down the river and loved it. The owners were lovely and really welcoming.

Disliked: Not a lot going on in the local area but we weren't there long enough for that to be a problem. No toilet paper available in the loos.

Electric optional grass tent or trailer tent pitch

Liked: Our stay was nothing short of wonderful. The site was idyllic; towering pine trees scatter shade over campers resting after a day of various activities: climbing, cycling, canoeing, etc. The managers are fastidious; cleaning facilities several times per day and are amiable and multilingual (English, French, German). We intend to return yearly!

Electric optional grass tent or trailer tent pitch

Local attractions

Get out and explore by hiring a bike or canoe from the site; friendly reception staff can also give you details of hikes both gentle and strenuous. There are some comely little fishing spots along the Gartempe river and the nearby Anglin, and more than 100 routes for experienced climbers along the limestone cliffs around Saint-Pierre-de-Maillé. Drive up to Angles-sur-l’Anglin (10 minutes), to potter about in the pretty village and to wander around the ruins of its hilltop fortress and see the prehistoric carvings in the Roc-aux-Sorciers cave. If you’re partial to a castle or two, fit in a trip to Chauvigny, where there are five to pick from (or visit them all on a castle crawl). La Roche-Posay, a 20-minute drive from the site, is the place to visit for a golf course, horse racing and thermal spa sessions. Even if you’re not actually heading into the baths, the Parc Thermal is a handsome place to wander around, with its gardens divided into themed areas. If the kids demand to up the adrenaline levels somewhat, the fab Futuroscope theme park is 45 minutes’ drive away.
