It's free, quick and easy!
- Quiet family campsite three kilometres from a sandy beach
- A 20-minute walk to Saint-Georges-d'Oléron; Royan an hour's drive
- Heated swimming pools, on-site bike rental, snack bar and kids' club
Island escapes and oodles of outdoor swims await at Camping Le Transat, a three-hectare family-oriented site two kilometres outside of Saint-Georges-d'Oléron.
This green and leafy site is a mere five-minute drive from the nearest sandy beach, so make sure to pack your swimming stuff, suncream and plenty of snacks. Because it's so close, you're likely to spend quite a few days on Plage de Foulerot beach during your break. That said, Camping Le Transat is located on one of western France's prettiest islands, so if you're looking to change it up a bit you can simply hire a bike at reception and pedal out through the dunes…
Stays at Camping Le Transat can be as lively or as languid as you want: alternate between dips in the pool or games of pétanque and snoozes on the sun loungers, perhaps stirring every now and again to go and get drinks at the bar. The kids won't be short of activities either, as there's a mini farm, a playground and table tennis tables, plus a special splash zone just for them.
In the summer season, after a pizza or fish dish at the on-site restaurant, there's site-organised entertainment to get you into the holiday mood, with bingo nights, magic shows and dance evenings all on the cards. Younger kids and teens also have dedicated entertainment options during the day, with frequent sport and craft events to get stuck into.

Local attractions
For days of low-key sightseeing, start off in Saint-Georges-d'Oléron (five minutes' drive), where there are plenty of handsome historic buildings and a tourist office to help you get your bearings. The same distance away is Cheray market (five minutes), where you can pick up the freshest fruit and veg. Sticking around on the island? Make sure to visit its capital, Saint-Pierre-d'Oléron (10 minutes), where there's a local history museum plus bars and a riding stable to keep you occupied.
An hour away on the mainland is La Palmyre, a scenic seaside spot with a popular zoo, and Royan (an hour), a mid-sized resort with attractions including theme parks, an animal park, golf courses and a casino. This is also where to head to catch the ferry over the Gironde estuary to Le Verdon-sur-Mer and Soulac (an hour and 45 minutes).
Had enough of the sea? Make tracks inland towards Saintes (an hour and 10 minutes), a historic town where gorgeous medieval and Roman architecture, performing arts festivals and riverboat cruises up and down the Charente are on offer.
