  • In the village of Semussac, 15 minutes’ drive from the Gironde coast
  • Close to beaches, watersports, bike hire, public pool and horse riding
  • Playground, pétanque court and café with outdoor seating
What might you think to the idea of a site near the south-western coast of France in a rather swell countryside setting with a the sands and sea of Meschers-sur-Gironde less than 15 minutes’ drive away, and a swift 20-minute drive from beach-based activities like land yachting, go-karting, windsurfing, paddleboarding and surfing in Royan? Camping Bois de la Chasse has all this in its very local vicinity, plus a public pool in Cozes, plus a zoo and a national park, plus caves and a 17th-century citadel, all within between 10 minutes’ and an hour’s drive too. In a peaceful countryside locale and around 15 kilometres from the coast, la Chasse is a properly spiffing site in comely countryside surrounds, a short walk into the village of Semussac in the spectacular Charente-Maritime department. Plenty of beaches along France’s south-western coastline are within easy reach by car (or by bike, if you can bring your own or rent one in nearby Saint-Georges-de-Didonne), and more are around an hour’s drive away around Île d'Oléron. There’s heaps of space on site for kids to happily bound in, as well as a playground and – should they wish to learn the art of French bowling – a pétanque court, plus loan of kit for outdoor games like frisbee, volleyball, ping pong. If, however, they fancy a spot of quiet time, board games and books can be borrowed on site too. While the kids are kept happy, grownups can relax around site and admire the scenic surrounds, have a stroll among the grounds or plonk themselves at one of the café’s outdoor tables to get on with planning the following days of sightseeing, all while sipping on a coffee or something cool. Come evening time during the summer months, guests of all ages will be muchly amused by entertainment that comes in the form of karaoke nights and fun and family-focused themed events. When it comes to supplies, aside from the food and beverages served at the café, bread and pastries can be ordered the day before for morning delivery during July and August, and you can keep yourself topped up with regional tipples too, for Pineau des Charentes, cognac, and local wines are all on sale at the park. Off site, supermarkets and a bakery are close by in Semussac, and you can pick up all sorts of tasty local treats at the regular farmers’ markets in Meschers, Saint-Georges-de-Didonne and Royan.
