Bring a bike along for a break at Camping Les Dunes, a wooded site on Île de Ré, to niftily navigate the more than 100 kilometres of paths on this cyclists’ paradise island.

If you’ve not got a bike (and would prefer not to hire one), sticking to your own two feet works just fine as the site sits in Le Bois-Plage-en-Ré, around 10 minutes’ walk from the centre of the settlement and a couple of minutes on foot from the nearest beach, Plage du Petit Sergent.
Shake off the sand and head home to plan the next day: the free wifi comes in handy when you’re plotting explores and the team is happy to help with tourist info at reception if some extra travel inspiration’s required. Guests can get their mitts on ice creams and cold drinks here as well, a grand way to relax after trying out some of the local watersports.
With a play area for the kids, the park is also geared up to keep les enfants busy. A laundrette with a washing machine, tumble dryer, iron and ironing board is a boon for big families and means there’ll be no need to lug all your dirty clothes back home (or half the beach with them…).

Local attractions
When not traversing the coastline on foot or the countryside on a bike, peruse the eye-catching villages in this pretty part of the world. La Couarde-sur-Mer's white houses pepped up by colourful shutters (five minutes’ drive) will liven up your social media snaps, while Saint-Martin-de-Ré (10 minutes) has a cute harbour and historic citadel to stop off and explore.
Adorable Ars-en-Ré is known for its bell tower and La Flotte (both 15 minutes) is home to the handsome Abbaye Notre-Dame-de-Ré dite des Châteliers and the Fort La Prée. It also hosts a market day – just the spot for stocking up on tasty treats.
Take your goodies off for a picnic at Loix, a peninsula wedged between the sea and salt marshes, or have a crack at kayaking around the Pointe du Grouin (15 minutes) here. Also near the ocean, the Phare des Baleines lighthouse has a mini museum (20 minutes) to meander around.
When it’s time to head back to the mainland, leave via the bridge to La Rochelle (half an hour away) and tick off the top sights in this town: think the aquarium, marina, Lantern Tower, Chain Tower, Tour Saint-Nicolas fortress tower and cathedral.
