It's free, quick and easy!
- Island family site under 10 minutes' stroll from La Flotte beach
- Half an hour's drive from La Rochelle
- Heated pool, playground, bouncy castle and summer snack bar
Sorting French family holidays here will be a breeze. For Camping Le Bel Air is on the lush little island of Île de Ré off the coast from La Rochelle – and has so much to do on site you may not get quite enough time on the Île de Ré's splendid beaches. (Should this sadly happen, you'll need another island hol.)
On the west coast of France in the Charente-Maritime department, the Île de Ré's been flocked to by sensible sorts for centuries (and celeb sorts in recent times: see who you can spot). It's famed for its beaches, its bike paths, its UNESCO-listed old city of Saint-Martin… and for its oysters, which must be sampled in the island restaurants and which you can buy in the markets in the main towns. The closest beach to Le Bel Air is La Flotte, under a kilometre away.
But. Days on site are highly recommended too. For this is a peaceful and scenic place to while away serene or gently active hours: leisure facilities include a heated outdoor pool, a playground, a bouncy castle, ping pong, and tennis available for a small extra charge. Activities three times a week and a kids' club on weekdays are arranged in July and August.
The site also has a summer snack bar, fresh bread and ice cream deliveries, and free wifi throughout.

Local attractions
Hire a bike on site for rides around the island's coastline, or take to the car get to some of the Camping Le Bel Air team's top picks, like the biggest harbour on the island at Ars, 25 minutes' drive away, and Baleines lighthouse within half an hour. The Lilleau des Niges National Nature Reserve is 35 minutes away, deep in the Île de Ré's famed salt marshes.
Probably the most famed spot on the island is its capital Saint-Martin-de-Ré, home to a citadel so mighty it makes up part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site of the Vauban fortifications. Potter around the Saint-Martin quay for alfresco eats and drinks after your sightseeing; if you're staying on into the evening, this is the liveliest centre of the island.
Bike away from the citadel and Saint-Martin towards the coast to reach the Le Bois Plage and its splendid beach three and a half kilometres from town: the outdoor and the indoor markets are also highly recommended.
