Beach holiday or lazy days around the swimming pool? It’s the best of both worlds at Camping du Petit Pont, a family-centric campsite that places you 10 minutes’ drive from Atlantic coast beaches and five minutes from Arvert town centre in the Charente-Maritime. Daily life on this relaxed site revolves around the pool (open June through to September), where you can top up the tan on loungers or splash around in the water with the kids. Let toddlers work off energy on the swings at the play area, or challenge older children to games of ping pong and table football. When you all run out of steam, borrow board games and cards from reception for quiet family nights in. No need to concern yourself with cooking either, as a snack bar is on hand during high season to serve up Bernard’s excellent burgers or pizzas. There’s also a popular twice-weekly moules-frites night – just remember to book in advance. A takeaway service is available too, if you’d rather eat en famille back at your accommodation – and if the kids are behaving well, treat them to waffles, pancakes or ice cream. Off site, you can fill your days with leisurely days on the beach at Ronce-Les-Bains (10 minutes’ drive) and explore the marina at La Tremblade (10 minutes). And if you fancy a taste of local nightlife, head for the clubs, cinemas and casino in Arvert.

Liked: Very friendly helpful staff, clean and tidy site. Small swimming pool to cool down as very hot. Good location, close to shops. Free wi fi.

Disliked: Mosquitoes/ midges were on the prowl for any uncovered flesh. Shared toilets/ shower facilities. No loo roll luckily we had some.

Liked: Level pitches under trees. Close to areas of interest. Cycle routes close by and easy to follow. Supermarket within walking distance. Office staff friendly and helpful. Clean and tidy site. Small but adequate outside pool on site.

Disliked: Sanitary facilities need updating - quite basic though adequate. Toilets lacked lighting so dark and locks and handles were loose. No toilet seats or paper. Set off a main road so noise from traffic apparent.

Disliked: Pitch was tiny and unkept. Toilets had no seats or paper. Site was rundown and cramped.

From the manager: Monsieur quand on est pas satisfait du site, on ne prolonge pas son séjour ce que vous avez fait.... Les emplacements camping font 80m2 en moyenne et sont entretenu régulièrement, au niveau des sanitaires il n'y a pas d'abatant pour une raison d'hygiène. Bonne fin de vacances à vous.

Local attractions

Outdoorsy visitors can hire bikes from the campsite to explore numerous local cycle paths leading to the landmark La Coubre Lighthouse (45 minutes by bike) and Ronce-Les-Bains (20 minutes) beaches. On sunny days, stay cool with rides through the trees at La Palmyre (half an hour). Down at the beach, try your hand at dinghy sailing or sand yachting off Plage des Pins de Cordouan (20 minutes’ drive). For family days out with the kids, there are sea lion and parrot shows at Zoo La Palmyre (15 minutes). Cross the Oléron Bridge to discover extensive sandy beaches, pretty villages and the castle on the Île d’Oléron (20 minutes), or visit the limestone cliff caves at Meschers-sur-Gironde (35 minutes). Royan (25 minutes) is known for its sheltered beaches and watersports, while the International Sea Centre at Rochefort (half an hour) makes an enjoyable day trip to poke around a rope factory and former naval dockyards. Marennes (15 minutes) is the spot for any budding gourmets in the family, as it's renowned for its oyster beds and seafood restaurants.

All guests spending the night at the park must present their ID at the reception desk and sign registration forms.
