If you’ve got your eye on the Vendée, it’s likely that you’ll already be aware that this is a fine area for a family holiday: beaches, bike rides, outdoor activities and family attractions galore await in this popular part of the world.
If you’d like to focus on those things rather than the business of building a tent, take a look at Villatent at Camping La Bretonnière, just on the edge of Saint-Julien-des-Landes. Stays at this flower-filled site are in spacious safari tents that are already set up and packed with useful things like beds, a private bathroom and kitchen facilities.
That means you can start touring straight away upon arrival – or get stuck into the site’s leisure options. There are two pools on site (one being heated and both with a cover so the fun can continue in less-great weather) along with a water play area for the kids. For a different kind of water activity, head down to the pond for some fishing.
Away from the water, energetic sorts can spend time at the sports courts and (in summer) various entertainments including aqua gym or Zumba and kids’ or teens’ activities. Meanwhile, those who’ve come along here to relax might like to pick up a book from the library or sign up for a massage.
Whatever the plan, you’ll need to eat, and that’s easily sorted too: grab snacks and pizzas from the snack bar or make use of the tent’s kitchen by picking up essentials at the shop (including a daily delivery of fresh rolls and croissants).

Local attractions
Once you’ve warmed up with a swim and some fishing on site, head out locally for more water-based days at Lac du Jaunay (five minutes’ drive) or over at the coast. Saint Gilles Croix de Vie and Les Sables d’Olonne are both about 25 minutes away, and both are excellent options for beaches, activities like surfing and family attractions like the Zoo des Sables d’Olonne.
If you’re bringing bikes along, it’s recommended that you take them up to Noirmoutier (50 minutes’ drive). Many kilometres of bike path await on this pretty island – and the journey there is quite something too, if you time it so that you can drive across the sandy Passage du Gois which only opens up at low tide.
Turning back inland, a lovely way to spend a few hours is to take a boat trip through the maze of marshes in the Marais Poitevin Regional Natural Park (half an hour). Alternatively, explore closer to home by saddling up for a horseback outing at a riding centre two kilometres from the site.
