  • Peaceful site in a national forest with a swimming and fishing lake
  • In Normandie-Maine park, a five-minute drive from Sillé-le-Guillaume
  • Playground, TV room, library, badminton, volleyball and pétanque
After a stay in Sarthe’s Normandie-Maine regional park, on the edge of a swimming and fishing lake, and at the crossroads of hiking, biking and horse-riding paths? If this has you nodding your head excitably, make your way to Camping de la Forêt. Whether your plans are to potter around the Pays de la Loire with family or friends, this site a five-minute drive from the village of Sillé-le-Guillaume is grand for recharging your batteries while surrounded by nature. Alternatively, rev things up a touch with the range of outdoor activities organised in the local area, from rock and tree climbing to mountain biking and kayaking. Less keen on sports and more into scouting out some scenic spots? Go further north into the Alpes Mancelles region to wander the wooded hills and valleys hereabouts. Trekking trails start right from the park too – simply ask staff for info on recommended routes. If all this is sounding a tad too tiring, stay on site and chill out with leisurely games of pétanque, table tennis and table football, then move indoors and browse for a book in the library or turn on the telly in the TV room and flick through the channels. Feeling sluggish? Shake things up with games on the volleyball and badminton courts; energetic enfants have a playground to whizz around and entertainment for the whole family is organised in the warmer months.

Electric grass pitch

Liked: We just adored this place. Spent 2 nights here with our motorhome on one of the hottest weeks in September. The reception were super helpful. Large well-maintained pitch with electricity and water. Showers and toilets were clean and with plenty of hot water. I used the laundry facilities here. The large industrial machine is a very reasonable place. The best part of this place is the amazing lake and beach. we took our bikes down to the Beachside bar and had a swim from the lovely sandy beach. Most certainly would come again

Disliked: Cannot think of anything

Electric grass pitch

Liked: The spacious pitch. Stunning location. Beautiful lake to swim in and walk around. Surrounded by forest. All necessary facilities including chemical disposal which wasn’t apparently available when I booked. (Relief!!) Beautiful area.

Disliked: Tricky finding electric supply!! Had to try 3 pitches before we sorted it. Showers clean and functional with plenty of hot water however a bit tatty. No food or drink available.

Non-electric grass pitch

Liked: Single parent travelling with 2 adult daughters and one of their partners. The tent pitches were flat, easily accessible and we were located not too far from the toilet facilities which was easy to find. The facilities were extremely clean, tidy and the showers nice and hot. The beach by the lakeside was lovely and clean too. The bar near the lake offered food, drinks and some entertainment on certain nights. Great place to sit and watch the world go by. The staff were very nice and friendly. They were extremely helpful when we called to say that we would be arriving very late due to our ferry breaking down for 2 hours in the middle of the sea. They provided us with detailed instructions as to what to do when we arrived and everything went smoothly. Thank you. The weather wasn’t the best, but that didn’t really matter we still managed a swim in the lake and had a great time. The site is around 1/2 hour from Le Mans and an hour from Tours. Great location with forest walks, wildlife, fishing, canoe or pedalo hire and bikes. Would definitely recommend as it was also very peaceful with no rowdy groups which was great, but plenty to do.

Disliked: Nothing against the site at all just wish some people would learn how to pull the flush - it would be much appreciated especially when we are all obviously sharing the facilities

Electric grass pitch

Liked: Spacious pitches with choice of shade and sun. Calm ambience. Pleasant site and surroundings. Nice lake with beach and swimming area, although can’t see lake from site. Walk around lake is 4.5km. Clean facilities. Daily bread order. Friendly, helpful staff.

Disliked: The chemical toilet facilities could be improved, e.g. swilling hose. Little awkward to use and could be cleaner. But this is a minor issue.

Local attractions

Tour the teeny-tiny old towns and villages in this rural area, beginning with the closest – Sillé-le-Guillaume, five minutes’ drive – for the massive medieval château, then roam the ramparts of another old castle at Fresnay-sur-Sarthe (20 minutes), stopping by the Headdress Museum to poke around the curious collection on display here. The village of Saint-Céneri-le-Gérei (30 minutes) is known for a fresco-filled 11th-century church set above a river; if you’re more taken by towns, amble around Alençon’s UNESCO-registered centre with a fine art museum exploring the history of its lace-making heritage. To please the nippers, Zoo de La Flèche has 1,200 animals including rarities like white tigers, polar bears and red pandas. The habitats here are designed to mimic the natural environments of the creatures – look out for landscapes ranging from the Argentinian pampas to the Australian bush. Guaranteed to up the pace, Le Mans (50 minutes) is a gem in the region, especially if you’re keen on racing. Delve into the history of the city's renowned 24 Hours of Le Mans motor race at the 24 Hours of Le Mans Museum, and have a go on the simulator rides and go-karts at the racetrack.
