Relaxation and family fun are the watchwords at Camping Les Étangs du Plateau des Landes, tucked into a peaceful and lush lakeside setting in the Pas-de-Calais. Ten minutes’ drive from the handsome, historic market town of Saint-Omer, the site is also close to the untamed Marais Audomarois wetlands. The campsite is one big playground for the whole family. Kids can amuse themselves leaping around on bouncy castles, while teens try out inflatable table soccer, shooting basketball hoops or playing ping pong. Everyone can get together over gently competitive pétanque tournaments, while anglers keep busy casting for carp and trout at one of the ten fishing ponds. Thanks to the hard-working entertainments team, there’s always something happening around the place. The kids’ club organises nature trails, games and treasure hunts for your younger offspring during the day, and on summer weekends, there’s an evening schedule of live music, drinking games and themed dinners. All your eating and drinking needs are catered for too. You can order breakfast breads and pastries from reception, and fill the kids up with family favourites like burgers and pizzas from the licensed snack bar – both are open seven days a week in the summer holidays, along with the small essentials shop, which sells wine and local produce too.

Disliked: De toilet en douche zitten in de dezelfde ruimte, nu was het niet druk maar wellicht in het hoogseizoen dat dit onhandig zou kunnen zijn.

A day in the Marais Audomarois (15 minutes’ drive) may be on your sightseeing list. With vast tracts of market gardens and canals still only navigable by water, the best way to explore this manmade marshland is on a flat-bottomed traditional wooden ‘bacôve’ boat. Take your binoculars to search for bitterns, kingfishers and storks in the Romelaëre Nature Reserve (20 minutes), ancient peat bogs now criss-crossed with hiking routes. Add some culture into your holiday mix with a visit to Saint-Omer (10 minutes’ drive), where you can view decorative arts at Hotel Sandelin Museum and admire the jewel-coloured stained-glass windows in the Gothic-era Cathedral of Notre-Dame. Wind up your visit at a pavement café in Place du Maréchal Foch, where there’s a lively market on Saturday mornings. Kids demanding more action? Hit the rollercoasters and waterslides at family-orientated Dennlys Parc (20 minutes), or pedal through Pays de Lumbres woodland along the Trotti-trail (25 minutes) following a former railway line. Hit a rare rainy day? Divert to the indoor pool at SCENEO (10 minutes) to wear off excess energy swimming laps.
