  • On the edge of the Caps et Marais d'Opale Natural Regional Park
  • Pétanque court, games room, summer restaurant and bar, kids' games
A site for British sorts – and for other holidaying types seeking pleasant stays in the north of France: Camping Caravanning St Louis is a green and peaceful site in the Nord-Pas-de-Calais, in the municipality of Autingues. At a 25-minute drive from the Channel Tunnel and five minutes' drive from the A6 motorway, your holiday options are huge here – use the site as a stopover on your way south into France or north into Blighty, or stay put to explore these handsome surrounds. If you're sticking around for a bit, you may like to know taht the site is on the edge of the Caps et Marais d'Opale Natural Regional Park for hikes and bike rides around its hills, countryside and marshland; it's also an easy couple of kilometres from Ardres with its lake and waterside leisure complex. This is a mightily well-maintained site, with excellent amenities including a renovated shower and toilet block hailed as spotless by gratified former guests. The friendly and helpful team also help to make this a popular place, as do the well-mown pitches, laidback vibe and room aplenty for smaller guests to run around. Summer is the liveliest time here, with an entertainment programme running in July and August, and a bar and restaurant open in the high season for convenient foodie times – and splendid views. A pétanque court, playground, games room and wifi zone are available at all times. Camping Caravanning St Louis is just over a kilometre or about 15 minutes' walk from Autingues and its shops and petrol station. Bread can be ordered on site from May to mid-September.

Electric optional grass pitch

Liked: Excellent, well organised site with good facilities. Friendly welcome. The clean, well-equipped toilet block was much appreciated after bad experiences at the previous campsite. There is a good-looking bar and restaurant although we didn't make use of it. Good stopover for Calais ferry. Local town not far away has all facilities.

Disliked: Very busy, even in late September. The chemical toilet disposal had no water supply for "green" purposes. We found this a great inconvenience as we could not clean our toilet properly, and the "green" claim bogus because it just means that clients have to re-clean toilets at next stop - so water usage is just passed on to someone else.

Electric optional grass pitch

Liked: A warm welcome greats you at this small rural campsite, ideal for the overnight stop en route either to the ferry ( 25 mins)or after a long journey, the shower block is good & cleaned regularly, small bar and restaurant on site doing simple food, ( pizza, fish and chips etc) all well presented and it makes for a nice evening get together before heading home, all in all we had a lovely pleasant stay for the one night...

Disliked: slightly dated in places, with static caravans as well as tourers, French two pin electric so remember your adapter ( they are available at reception if required) barrier opens at 6am for exit.

Electric optional grass tent, campervan or trailer tent pitch

Liked: Upon arrival this site looked great and very welcoming. The pitch was great lots of room for us The layout of the site was very good, great grass coverage underfoot, good privacy, electric hook up. The wash block was very modern and very clean ..big tick for us. Hot water, shower cubicles, separate toilets, wash area for washing up. The restaurant was fantastic the food was great, wide choice on the menu reasonably priced too and plentyful, wine list was good and we both enjoyed the cocktails!!!!! The staff we very very happy and obliging too. To be honest we couldn't fault this site. Can't wait to go back next year

Local attractions

The site is on the edge of the Caps et Marais d'Opale Natural Regional Park, a popular local spot for walks and bike rides; more of the same, as well as wildlife watching in scenic surrounds, is at the Canche Bay Nature Reserve to the park's south. The medieval town of Ardres a few minutes' drive away is a must-see in this part of Pas-de-Calais – and a popular destination for holidaymakers on weekend breaks from Britain. Carve out time for the ancient and award-winning Thursday morning market, the bird sanctuary and the garden of the Maison de la Nature at the very least… and make it a mission to find the town bakery and patisserie too. From Ardres, follow the canal (starting from Calais harbour) along to Saint-Omer and the nearby World War II bunker Blockhaus of Éperlecques and its museum, or further along to Lille, an hour and 25 minutes' drive from the site.
