  • Spacious site in Gravelines, right next to Petit-Fort-Philippe beach
  • A 25-minute drive from Dunkirk ferries and 35 from Calais
  • Spa, miniature golf, pétanque, fitness room and summer activities
With a name like Camping des Dunes, could it possibly be that this is a seaside site? Why, yes indeed – and what a seaside setting it is, in the Nord-Pas-de-Calais resort of Gravelines and right next to the gorgeous Petit-Fort-Philippe beach. Getting out onto the beach could hardly be simpler, as there’s direct access along paths through the dunes onto the three kilometres of fine sand that lie beyond. Those paths are good for a sea-view wander too (or a sandy game of hide-and-seek…) If you’d rather stay closer to base, there’s a great swathe of space for sunbathing, and a lifeguarded swimming area. Active sorts can play games of beach football or try their hand at windsurfing, kitesurfing or sand yachting. Being just a short stumble from beach to pitch, it’s easy to barrel back and forth throughout the day, mixing up hours on the sand with time back on site playing games of pétanque or miniature golf, working out in the fitness room or sloping off to the spa for some hot tub/sauna time while the kids are entertained at the playground. Extra facilities laid on during high season include a bar (selling drinks and all sorts of naughty treats like waffles, ice creams and candyfloss), a mini market, snack bar and a games room. Summer weekday mornings are dedicated to kids’ club activities, with entertainment running three evenings a week too. Those folk coming and going across the channel may like to note the handy presence of ferries in Dunkirk (25 minutes’ drive) and Calais (35 minutes).

Local attractions

You don’t have to stray too far for a day out around here – start your local wanderings by climbing the 116 steps of the Gravelines lighthouse (10 minutes’ walk) for cracking views over your seaside surrounds, then walk to the town centre (half an hour) to visit the harbour, the bell tower and the medieval gardens within the walled town. Hire boats or pedaloes to see the ramparts from the water, and have a look at Espace Tourville to see a traditional ship reconstruction. Folk with an interest in the natural world may like to take their binoculars over to the Platier Oye nature reserve (20 minutes’ drive) to see what sort of native birds they can spot; larger creatures from around France and the rest of Europe reside at Fort-Mardyck zoo (25 minutes). Families with something more active in mind should take a look at Sportica leisure centre (five minutes), where there’s a swimming pool, bowling alley and roller rink, or Parc Galamé (15 minutes) for nature trails, a petting zoo and a swimming lake.
