- Family-friendly holiday park on a hilltop above a Dordogne valley
- Set in 11 hectares of oak woodland, five minutes’ drive to Mauroux
- Pools, bike rental, restaurant, sports facilities and kids’ clubs
Scout out a hilltop hideaway at Village des Cigales, a peaceful holiday park set in 11 hectares of woodland and a mere five minutes from Mauroux by car. This green and pleasant spot is dotted with oaks and is in the Dordogne, a perennial favourite for travellers of all types.
Close to tourist towns and famed French villages like Puy-l'Évêque and Fumel (both 15 minutes), stays here come with ample scope for moseying around the Lot department. Bikes can be rented from reception if you fancy conducting your explores on two wheels (spontaneous cycle to a local vineyard, anyone?), and there are three pools back on site where you can take dips on your return.
Village des Cigales’ restaurant also serves up tasty local wines and holds regular themed evenings celebrating food from Italy, Hawaii and everywhere in between. Kids a bit fussy with food? Not to worry – pizzas, fries and other snacks are also served up here.
Any enfants accompanying you en route have a kids’ club, playground, trampoline and human-sized chess board to make the most of too, while adults can take on the pétanque, tennis and volleyball courts. Aqua aerobics classes are organised during high season.
There’s wifi across the site, including in communal areas, and a cosy bar for meeting other guests or chatting to the owners about life in this lovely location. Close by are several supermarkets, restaurants and bars, a tourist information office, bakeries and souvenir shops (10 minutes).

Local attractions
If sleepy villages and towns with cobbled streets are your thing, start off in nearby Puy-l'Évêque (15 minutes' drive), a medieval riverside spot, or head to Fumel (15 minutes) and poke around its château. At Fumel you can also take boat trips on the river Lot, a scenic spot whose many historic sights will be pointed out by knowledgeable local navigators.
This part of France doesn't mess around when it comes to wine. Connoisseurs can stock up on bottles of Cahors, an AOC red grown in vineyards west of the town of the same name (an hour); if you're not sure you want to drive so far (or if all that driving doesn't fit with your drinking plans) there are also some great local vineyards on the Lot around Fumel.
If the kids aren't into all these winemaking demos, change tack with trips to Parc en Ciel adventure park (half an hour) or to meet the zoo animals at Z'Animoland (45 minutes).
