Local attractions
You can hike, sledge, ice skate and dip into the outdoor pool at Gèdre, or drive 20 minutes from the site for all sorts of outdoor adventures at Gavarnie, the famed ski resort with donkey trekking and horse riding in the summer months. More headily, have some hiking or skiing at Barèges (30 minutes' drive), also a top spot for canyoning and bungee jumping.
One of the most famed walks – and bike rides – in the Pyrenees is also around half an hour away, around the spectacular glacial circus of the Cirque de Troumouse on the Spanish border. Or keep your outdoor adventures strictly on the strolling side of things with a meander around the comely old village of Luz-Saint-Sauveur or Luz, home of the Napoleon Bridge.
For a family day out, take the kids to the Pyrénées Animal Park (aka Marmots Hill) 45 minutes' drive away, 14 hectares of viewsome mountains home to over 100 species.
