La Clairière du Verbamont: Meet other guests at the campfire

General

  • Peaceful and scenic site in a secluded clearing of the Darney forest
  • A 10-minute drive from Claudon and 15 from La Rochère and Vittel
  • Campfires, shared kitchen, barbecues, pizza nights and forest hikes

Woodland wanders without any need to drive? How fabuleux. Such are the treats in store for guests at La Clairière du Verbamont, hidden away in a peaceful clearing in the Darney forest 10 minutes’ drive from the Vosges department town of Claudon.

Trails to take you on gentle strolls and lengthier rambles start straight from the site, so even the car can have a bit of a rest here. Owners Cécile and Christophe will arm you with a map and point you in the direction of some of their fave routes, such as the amble to L’Arboretum de la Hutte a few minutes from base, where giant sequoia stretch up towards the sky and a huge Douglas fir has been in residence for many a year.

If you’re in the mood to get more adrenaline running, take a trip into Claudon to dive off the 43-metre high Pont Tatal – with bungee cord firmly attached, of course – or head instead to Fontenoy-le-Château (25 minutes) for some competitive paintballing.

For lazier days, stick to the site for moments among the greenery and nights gazing up at the stars, or meeting other guests by the communal campfire. When hunger strikes, wander over to the shared outdoor kitchen or stoke up the barbie and get something cooking; you can even have a crack at using the bread oven if you wish, or leave it to the experts by signing up to join in with one of Christophe’s sociable pizza nights.

Please note

No cars/motorcycles at the site. All cars must be parked in the designated area.

Campsite overall was great. You really feel part of an eco-project.
Would recommend joining in on one of the social pizza nights. We only stayed for one day, but this was a sure way to meet some new faces. Great walks, tree house, portaloo and animals.

The cabin huts were clean and cosy. Can easily sleep a small family of 4. My 8-year-old son wanted to stay there for one year! Christophe was very welcoming (and busy).

    Disliked:

Showers and toilets - not enough!
The campsite only takes cash, no cards. Wasn't great to discover this after an 8-hour drive, but perhaps my fault given the location.

Local attractions

Fancy putting together a picnic full of local treats for your next foray into the forest? Set forth on a foodie day, plucking fruit from Brisseverre Farm (10 minutes’ drive), picking up traditional sweets from Confiserie Delisvosges (15 minutes) and taking a tour of Chevrerie des Granges (25 minutes) to meet the goats and try out their cheeses. For a tipple to come home to, pick up a bottle of something at Distillerie Riondé (25 minutes).

For more scenic strolls, take off to Chatillon-sur-Saône (half an hour) to meander among around the medieval fortifications or hit the hilly trails of the Ballons des Vosges Regional Natural Park (40 minutes). Keen to kick off those shoes? France’s first barefoot park is half an hour away at La Ferme Aventure.

This is an area famed for its glass makers, and you can get out to see the crafty folk in action at La Rochère glass factory (15 minutes) before perusing some of the pretty exhibits at La Musée d’Hennezel-Clairey (10 minutes).

Time for a rest? Venture to Vittel or Contrexéville (both around half an hour) to soak in the thermal waters and snap up spa treatments.
