  • Smart safari tents on a wooded site in the foothills of the Pyrenees
  • Half an hour from Perpignan and less than an hour from the coast
  • Busy activity programme on site, plus restaurant and river swimming
Holiday time is supposed to be nice and easy, right? And that’s very much the way things work at Villatent at Camping Le Canigou, where Pyrénées-Orientales hols are hosted in smart safari tents in the woods just outside Espira-de-Conflent. Each of those tents can sleep up to six people (in proper beds, no less) and has its own kitchen, comfy lounge area and bathroom with shower and toilet. And the outdoor space is pretty nifty too, with a deck positioned to max out on the views, and seating to chill out on while you take it all in. You may possibly need that space to relax in as well… because this is a site that’s packed with things to do, and in the summer months there’s a real emphasis on stuff that should please young folk between the ages of 10 and 20. If you reckon the likes of canyoning, rafting and mountain biking will meet with approval, this is the place for you (and all organised by the site – nice and easy, remember?) On top of that, there’s a high ropes course, and a natural swimming area in the river, and a whole host of daily free high-season activities (raft building, pub quiz, Spanish evening…) And thankfully there’s space to relax too – the Dutch owners have run this site for over 20 years and understand the importance of a good cup of coffee and a sandwich in the morning, plus easy access to eats at the restaurant in the evening. Takeaway pizzas are on offer too, as is live music on a Saturday evening.

Local attractions

Away from all the antics organised on site, there’s plenty to keep you active in the surrounding area – this is, after all, a site that’s in the foothills of the Pyrenees. And that means all sorts of walks, bike rides, motorbike outings and other outdoor activities await (canyoning, canoeing, climbing, abseiling… take your pick). If you’re not up for full-on adrenaline activities, that’s no problem – take wanders around the intriguing rock formations at Les Orgues, just outside Ille-sur-Têt (20 minutes’ drive), seek out the abandoned village of Comes (35 minutes) or take a step into the past at the ruins of Serrabone Priory (35 minutes). And it’s worth noting that some fab day trips can be on the cards too – perhaps strolling through the ancient streets of Perpignan (half an hour), hitting the beach at Argelès-sur-Mer (50 minutes) or nipping over the Spanish border for an arty time at the Dalí Museum in Figueres (an hour and 10 minutes).
