  • Peaceful family campsite with Pyrenees and Corbières views in the Aude
  • A five-minute drive to Puivert Castle; 20 minutes to Dinosauria
  • Swimming pool and games courts; kids’ entertainment in summer
Set 2,000 feet up in the Aude and with dramatic views over the Pyrenees and Corbières Massif, Camping Le Fontaulié Sud is a peaceful and spacious family campsite, spread over private pine forest and five minutes’ drive from the small alpine village of Nébias. Quiet this place may be, but there’s still plenty going on. Toddlers can wear off excess energy at the playground, and in high season the team of friendly professionals on site organise all manner of fun activities from pétanque games to karaoke for kids of all ages. You can swim laps of the outdoor pool while keeping an eye on non-swimmers in the paddling pool, or challenge the family to ping pong, table football and billiards. Need any more sporty activities? Tennis courts, white-water rafting on the Aude River and horse riding are all available within half an hour’s drive. And when it’s finally time to slow down and enjoy the laid-back vibe of this place, have a snooze on the sun deck by the pool or retreat to the library with a good book. If you’re lucky, you may catch colourful sunsets over the mountains, and you’ll certainly sleep well knowing that the site is securely locked and guarded at night.

Local attractions

For family hikes from the site, try the Labyrinthe Vert (20 minutes’ walk), with its way-marked trail through woodland leading to mountain views, or take the kids for a play on the inflatable climbing course at Parc de Loisirs “Saint Bertrand” (15 minutes’ drive). For more demanding exercise, get the mountain bikes out and head for the Pyrenean high peaks. Impressive Cathar castles to explore in the region include Puivert (five minutes) and Château de Montségur (35 minutes), and there’s even more history to be discovered at the UNESCO-listed castle and ramparts in Carcassonne (an hour and five minutes), which also warrants a day trip for its stunning old town, packed with lots of interesting shops and even more bistros for leisurely lunches. Have a look in the rather niche Museum of Millinery in Espéraza (25 minutes), itself a pretty, Aude-side town with an ornate 13th-century church that was once on the Santiago de Compostela pilgrimage route. And if the kids are getting restless with all this culture, treat them to Dinosauria (20 minutes), where they can see life-size T-rex skeletons and watch researchers working in the laboratory.

Electric optional grass pitch

Liked: The situation of the site!

Disliked: Unfortunately this site was no way ready to receive visitors! There was extensive work ongoing to build a swimming pool. The site owner was extremely helpful and in his first year of operation. The toilet facilities were very clean. But the site had a lot of static homes. The pitches very uneven and unkempt! We stayed only one night out of 3!
