It's free, quick and easy!
- In hostel grounds five minutes' drive from forest of Fontainebleau
- Fontainebleau town, château and forest trails within 15 minutes' drive
- A minute's walk from shops, eats and bars; an hour by car from Paris
A landscape of boulders and wild boar, royal retreats and ravine forests... an hour from Paris? C'est possible, and this friendly spot in Île-de-France is the proof.
Fontainebl’hostel is in the centre of the small French town of La-Chapelle-la-Reine, about 15 minutes' drive from Fontainebleau and its famed forest and fab château. Guests stay under canvas in the grounds of a hostel with full access to its communal facilities, which include hot showers and a fully equipped kitchen; you can unwind over a few games of table football in the common room or plan tomorrow's exploits using the free wifi. Bike hire is available from the site, and they’ll also rent you towels and sleeping mats and give lifts to and from public transport hubs for a fee.
Outside, barbecues and campfires are fine, and there’s a washing-up area for your pans, silver platters, porcelain teasets etc. You can park next to where you stay but if you’re arriving in a golden coach or anything on the big side, the access road is approximately 2.4 metres wide so caravans and large vehicles can’t get through.
There are plenty of shops, eats and drinks in La-Chapelle-la-Reine but make it snappy, you’ve got an invite to Fontainebleau...

Local attractions
The château, home to seven centuries’ worth of French rulers, is a must-see; Napoleon loved the place so much he stopped off for a hasty farewell as he fled into exile. This massive and ornate pile now houses four museums and galleries, as well as 1,500 rooms decked out with due royal extravagance: for a quick taste, drop in on Marie-Antoinette’s Ottoman-style boudoir.
If that’s not the kind of dropping you fancy, head for the forest to scramble along its sandstone boulder tracks. There are paths if you (or your ankles) prefer an easier time of it, and all-weather biking trails taking you through this diverse ecosystem of oak forests, peat bogs, heaths and wooded ravines, roamed by herds of deer and the odd, wild boar.
There’s history outside fancy Fontainebleau as well: Roman ruins at Sceaux-du-Gâtinais and the houses and favoured drinking dens of the French 19th-century landscape painters who named their movement after the handsome village of Barbizon (both half an hour’s drive).
For a spot of gastro-tourism, make for villages like Milly-la-Forêt and Boutigny-sur-Essonne (15 and 25 minutes) to taste and buy the famed Gâtinais peppermint, watercress and honey. The latter ingredient goes into some fab local beers if you’re thirsty...
There's so much to do here that the big city 18 miles to the north might not feature in your plans; if it does, the museums and galleries, boulevards and cathedrals of Paris are an hour away, easily doable for day trips.
