  • Peaceful woodland park 500 metres from Matignon
  • A 10-minute drive from the spectacular beaches of Saint-Cast-le-Guildo
  • Indoor pool, bowling alley, skate park and hiking/cycling tours
An award-winning leafy site in a beaut Bretagne setting… does that sound just bon to you? If so (as it should), take you and yours to the peaceful family park of Le Vallon aux Merlettes, for days among woodland and countryside, beach and coast. Le Vallon aux Merlettes is a green site of nearly four hectares, just 500 metres from the centre of Matignon village in the Cotes-d'Armor department of Brittany, and about 40 minutes' drive from Saint-Brieuc, the department capital. Hikes and bike tours depart straight from the site into the scenic surrounding countryside; for bucket and spade and sandy days, the north Brittany coast is 10 minutes' drive or about half an hour's cycle away. For once though, your offspring may not agitate too much immediately on arrival to get to the beach even before you've unpacked... For there are excellent kid-friendly options at their on-site disposal, including a bowling alley, a football pitch, a playground and a skate park for the seriously cool. Small sorts can also tackle tennis if of a size to wield a racket, or splash around in the paddling pool of the heated indoor water complex. Grownups concerned with essentials will be gratified to note the site's friendly and helpful vibe, along with its spotless amenities in the well-maintained bathroom block, with baby changing nursery, hairdryers and kids' showers. They might also like to note the location of the snack bar, with free wifi too...

Electric optional grass pitch

Liked Spotless facilities, wonderful location, lots of great things to do and really friendly owners and staff. We liked the site being on the edge of the lovely town of Matignon and the cycle ways down to the beautiful coastal town of St Cast.

Disliked Personally, we prefer single sex showers and toilets which we think they had before by the urinals being in only one block. But as we showered early morning or late night, no one else was there anyway.

Lovely site and people but not go there again in the ‘fly’ season.

Electric optional grass pitch

Liked Clean modern shower and toilet blocks. Good number of washing up sinks. Washing machine and tumble dryer is available to buy token for. Swimming pool, volley ball, tennis, petaque available. Bar and small shop sometimes open.

Quiet, well organised site with spacious touring pitches.

Short walk to local shops and restaurants and bars.

Disliked Would have preferred to have hot and cold taps in washing cubicles and also at the washing up sinks, rather than just one or the other.
Wifi only seemed to work very early in morning before too many people over loaded it.

Local attractions

A tree climbing park, an 18-hole golf course and a recreation park are all nearby, as are watersports such as diving, boat trips, sand yachting and paddleboating from the Cotes-d'Armor waters. Mountain bike and hiking trails leave from nearby; ask the amiable owners for their top tips on which to follow. The closest beaches are at Saint-Cast-le-Guildo, the port town and seaside resort that became a swish place to build one's villa around the middle of the 19th century (the Quartier des Mielles and the Pointe de la Garde are where you'll see the poshest examples). Sandy beaches are around the town, along with a spacious Emerald Coast headland, hidden coves and the GR 34 coastal route. A couple of capes are must-sees around this part of Brittany, the first being the purple headland of Cape Erquy, 20 minutes' drive away at the eastern end of St-Brieuc Bay and home to Erquy port, famed for its scallops and beach resort. Then there's stunning Cap Fréhel, 20 minutes' drive to the north, with seabird reserve, old lighthouse and fortified castle, and spectacular vistas over the Emerald Coast and the Channel Islands.
