  • Cosy treehouse stays in the grounds of a spectacular Burgundy château
  • A five-minute drive from Château-Chinon, 40 minutes from Autun
  • Indoor swimming pool, fishing lake, restaurant and food delivery
Find your swimming cossie, grab your most elegant vêtements, and pack them in luggage that’s easy to carry… During treetop stays at the family-friendly Domaine de Chaligny, five minutes’ drive from Château-Chinon in the Nièvre department of Burgundy, you’ll need all three. In the grounds of a stunning château and on 15 hectares of natural park, both of which are within Morvan Regional Natural Park, this site is a properly peaceful spot. Spend nights in the canopies of the trees, then wake to sounds of nature getting its day started. No need to fill days with lots of activity either – relish the slow pace hereabouts instead. Sidle along to the château’s lake if spending a few hours casting out lines and hoping for lucky catches sounds like a treat, or retire instead to the indoor swimming pool, which is open daily. Delectable eats are handily sorted too. Head to the restaurant in the château when dining indoors sets tastebuds tingling, or order up packed lunches, cocktails and home-cooked dishes – made with local seasonal products by a local chef – to be delivered right to the foot of the tree.

Local attractions

Nights spent in the branches not enough? Pass days doing Tarzan impressions at Arbr’acadabra, a treetop adventure course 25 minutes’ drive from base. If spending hours on solid ground is preferable, opt instead for wanders to the nearby Château-Chinon (five minutes), where visitors have a costume museum and a museum dedicated to Président François Mitterand to explore. Within 10 minutes of base are the village of Moulins-Engilbert, its museums dedicated to the famed Charolais cow, and its château. Sticking with the urban theme, make the 40-minute journey to the town of Autun to clamber about the ruined temple, visit the (not ruined) Roman theatre, get an education in the museums, or shop for bargains at the weekly markets. Go bigger, then, with a trip to the city of Nevers (55 minutes) and its cathedral, palace, aqueduct, and museums of education and archaeology, or keep it simpler (while still focusing on the past) at Bibracte (30 minutes), the site of famed chieftain Vercingetorix’s last stand against the Romans. Days out in nature ought to be spent at Dragne waterfall (30 minutes) or Lac de Pannecière (20 minutes), on hikes at Haut-Folin (30 minutes) or Mont Beuvray (35 minutes), or – during snowier seasons – skiing at Haut-Folin.
