  • Lakeside site in the woods between Crux-la-Ville and Saint-Saulge
  • In an area with around 250 km of hiking or mountain bike trails
  • Outdoor pool and lake access for fishing, canoeing and swimming
Love a lakeside location? Then you’ll likely be more than happy with the setup at Camping de l’Etang du Merle, a friendly Nièvre region site between the small towns of Crux-la-Ville and Saint-Saulge (and a leisurely five-minute drive from either). This five-acre site is a peaceful place that's full of trees and birdsong, but the central attraction surely has to be direct access to the lake (the very same Étang du Merle that gives the place its name). On balmy days you may wish simply to dangle your feet in the waters while clutching an ice cream, but it’s also a good place to fish or swim, and you can also launch canoes to paddle around. Those intrepid types that require a whole heap more activity can set forth on around 250 kilometres of mountain bike or hiking trails in the area around the site, clamber through the trees at adventure parks or head into the Morvan Regional Natural Park for rafting and horse riding. Meanwhile, folks with something more laidback in mind can stick around on site for days spent splashing around at the pool or playing volleyball, pétanque, table tennis or badminton. There's also a playground and plenty of useful facilities including a launderette, toilet blocks and a wifi service. Naturally, you’ll be needing eats whatever you’ve been up to: pick up supplies at the grocery store or at Saint-Saulge’s supermarket, or delegate catering responsibilities to staff at the site’s snack bar (open in high season).

Local attractions

Those with an eye for pretty things should certainly take a trip to Nevers (40 minutes’ drive), for its excellent fine arts and porcelain museum, and have a trot around its castle and cathedral. Other châteaux nearby include those in Bazoches (45 minutes) and Castellux (an hour). There’s a rather fine collection to peruse at the François Mitterand museum in Château-Chinon (40 minutes) too: all the splendid pieces here were gifts to the ex-president from around the globe. Folks who know a few things about motor racing may have perked up their ears at the mention of Nevers: it’s just a little further (45 minutes) to the racing circuit at Nevers-Magny, where a top-notch programme of car and motorbike races takes place throughout the year. If you’d like your activities with a more scenic green backdrop, head to Lac des Settons (an hour away) for watersports, climbing and mountain biking, head into the Morvan Regional Natural Park for rafting trips (50 minutes) or climb up into the treetops at Les Z’Accrochés adventure park (half an hour).
