  • Grassy pitches on a farm a 10-minute drive from Bayeux, in Calvados
  • Bayeux AVENTURE theme park 15 minutes’ drive; Omaha Beach half an hour
  • Dogs welcome; resident goats and cows; pétanque court
On a peaceful farm by the Aure river, surrounded by the lush agricultural landscape of Calvados, Aire de la Ferme Froide is a pretty sweet spot to explore this historic area of northern France. Remote it might feel, but the site is less than 10 kilometres from Bayeux (easily accessed via the nearby D67) and about a half-hour drive from the coast. And what a coast this is. The wide beaches are excellent for building sandcastles and running around in an attempt to fly kites (cue – one would hope – happy children); however, in 1944 these sandy stretches were also the theatre for the Allied invasion of Normandy, which means that there’s a lot to pique the interest of grown-ups (or of anyone who’s into World War II history). This includes museums like the Memorial Museum of Omaha Beach (25 minutes) and memorials like the British Normandy Memorial (half an hour), as well as the beaches themselves – from Omaha to Utah (half an hour’s drive and 50 minutes, respectively). Back at the site, a game of pétanque or communing with the farm animals (gentle cows and inquisitive goats, among others) ought to help raise your spirits after a day visiting sombre historical landmarks. Dogs are welcome, as long as they are well behaved and kept on a lead around the livestock. Owners Mickael and Stéphanie are on hand to suggest alternative activities (hot-air balloon flight, anyone?) and sights, from the early 13th-century Mondaye Abbey (five minutes, or a 20-minute walk) to amusement parks like Bayeux AVENTURE (15 minutes).

Electric optional grass and earth pitch

Liked: Cheap and cheerful- yes there is only one shower and toilet but it’s a small site and was no problem. Basic but clean and with hot water if you’re quick in the shower. Great location for Bayeux and cycling around.

Disliked: Nothing

Electric optional grass and earth pitch

Liked: A delightful, inexpensive and peaceful farm site. Nice touches such as the games kit supplied for kids, the nice flower baskets and hens and goat. There was only one toilet and shower as the toilet block is being refurbished but these were clean and its was no problem as it’s a small site.

Electric optional grass and earth pitch

Liked: This was a great little place perfect for me (grandma) with two grandchildren 5 & 7 in a tiny micro camper plus tent awning! Simple, basic, just what we wanted. Perfect to be near chickens and baby goat! The box of bats & balls plus outside table tennis table were brilliantly simple and fun. One toilet and shower, water and bins. What more do you need? This is what good old fashioned camp sites always used to be like years ago and we loved it! Spent two nights here on our way to catch the ferry, spent one day at the beach. This site is conveniently close to Caen.

Disliked: Nothing to dislike if you’re looking for basic facilities at a budget price.

Local attractions

The Musée de la Tapisserie de Bayeux, in Bayeux, displays the famed tapestry that narrates the story of William the Conqueror’s invasion of England in 1066, while the Museum of the Battle of Normandy, on the outskirts of town, recounts a different invasion: the events of D-Day. Caen (half an hour’s drive) spreads around a castle first built by William the Conqueror (or Guillaume le Conquérant, as he is known around these parts). The hilltop citadel also includes the Musée de Normandie, illustrating the history of the region, and a Museum of Fine Arts housing paintings by the Old Masters. In Colleville-sur-Mer (half an hour), the Overlord Museum is one of several local museums exploring the D-Day landings and the Battle of Normandy, with tanks and military vehicles, medals and uniforms, and re-enactments.
