  • Glamping accommodation on a Gironde wine estate
  • Half an hour by car from Bordeaux city centre or Saint-Émilion
  • Artisanal food and drink baskets available; bikes to borrow
Already know your Muscat from your Merlot? Or perhaps you're looking to get to grips with the basics of viticulture in the Gironde… Whatever your reason for coming to this part of southern France – and there are lots of them – there's comfortable and cosy accommodation ready for your stay at Les Cabanes de la Romaningue, a glamping site in the grounds of an 80-hectare country estate. The units here make as much use as possible of warm natural materials and all come with plenty of open-air space. You can also arrange a wide variety of aperitifs, breakfast baskets and dinner options to be delivered right to the door of your hideaway – perhaps the most stylish way to take advantage of all that outdoor furniture… Things are similarly plush inside, where the fully-equipped pods and caravans come with comfortable beds, homely furnishings and access to well-maintained washrooms. Few things are quite as exciting as being whisked away to a 16th-century wine-growing estate in southern France, but if you want to amp up the romance you could ask the staff to decorate your unit with candles and rose petals ready for your arrival. Elsewhere on site, there are bikes to borrow for adults and children, as well as board games you can use for quiet nights in. Rather take a city day tour instead? Bordeaux's UNESCO-listed city centre is half an hour's drive away.

Local attractions

Family-friendly outings on horseback are on offer at Poney-Club du Domaine de Rhodes (five minutes' drive), where kids can head out on forest trots or stick around for courses to help them get to grips with equestrianism. For parents and those without children, meanwhile, you're within a short drive of two 18-hole golf courses: Golf de Teynac (10 minutes) and Golf de Bordeaux-Cameyrac (10 minutes). There's far too much in Bordeaux for just one day, so it's handy to be somewhere where you can drop by regularly. In the city's historic centre (30 minutes), highlights include the spectacular Place de la Bourse, the Cité du Vin museum and strolling along the banks of the Garonne. Too much walking for little feet? Book yourself a spot on a riverboat tour. Saint-Émilion (30 minutes), another local wine hub, is a medieval village that's also well worth visiting. Further afield, don't miss top landmarks like Château de la Brede (40 minutes), the seaside resort of Arcachon (an hour and five minutes) and the Dune du Pilat (an hour and five minutes), Europe's tallest sand dune.
