  • Wildlife haven in a village on the banks of the Dronne river
  • A 10-minute drive to Aubeterre-sur-Dronne; 15 minutes to Échourgnac
  • Canoeing, kayaking and fishing on site; shops a short walk away
On the edge of a 13th-century bastide and tucked alongside a curve of the Dronne river, the setting of Camping La Dordogne Verte is a little bit like something plucked from a storybook. But there's nothing fictional about this dog-friendly family site in Périgord Vert… This site is a wildlife haven, very much like its surroundings, where guests can track down cycling trails, wild swimming, mountain biking, tree climbing, hiking or fishing easily enough. The Dordogne has stunning castles, Romanesque churches and prehistoric sites for those wanting a bit of history intertwined in their day trips too. Arguably the most important activities in the Dronne Valley are already sorted by the site, which organises canoeing or kayaking outings from its own pontoon. On the shaded banks, keen anglers can set down for a productive day of fishing. And if those activities don’t appeal at that exact moment, perhaps a paddle or a swim in the Dronne will do the trick? The bastide of Saint-Aulaye has shops and restaurants within 10 minutes’ walk of the site. Aubeterre-sur-Dronne, 10 minutes’ drive away, has an even larger selection of that sort of thing, along with galleries, restaurants and coffee shops. There’s also a public swimming pool 100 metres away from the site. This peaceful place is part of a local eco movement, so they invest in thoughtful revegetation, maintain the banks of the rivers (anglers will be happy to hear) and don’t denature the site with unnecessary construction.

Electric gravel and sand pitch (comfort)

Liked: Lovely and green as the name suggests with pitches under the trees, surrounded by the river. Great activities for families, we only had one night to enjoy but our kids had fun on the water slides. Would have been great to have longer to get out on the river and enjoy site more fully. Really great site for the price.

Disliked: The toilets and showers are in need of updating. No toilet paper provided, so easy to get caught short if not aware of this on first visit or you forgot!!

Electric gravel and sand pitch (comfort)

Liked: Well we planned to only stay 1 night but ended up staying an extra night, so it was positive. Great site for the money really. Receptionist very friendly but spoke very little English, but not through the lack of trying, we managed to hold a conversation and get the relevant information. Given a nice pitch right on the end (33 for reference!) which was extremely spacious, however it did come with a twist, see dislikes. Being so close to the River was brilliant as we had some Kayaks which was easily accessible and what a great clean river it was. The River goes right around the campsite with a couple of Weirs in between and the kids thoroughly enjoyed it and even the Wife aswell! Pool nice and clean, the flumes were dated but really was nothing wrong with them. Kids had a right laugh on them which is what it's about. Facilities decent enough, clean & warm water. No toilet roll though. If I forgot the toilet roll I used the paper towel meant for drying hands! The staff recommended the pizza restaurant over the road and it didn't disappoint. Well worth visiting but make a reservation, it's very busy! The high ropes over the bridge (5 mins walk at the most) worth every penny. Unlimited from 10am to 7pm for €39, 1 adult, 8 & 3 yr old. Brilliant fun. We did 3 hours and were exhausted by the end. The free Wifi is not even worth bothering with, it is so slow, but we were as far away as you could get so maybe didn't help. There is wifi you can pay for but we didn't.

Disliked: Turns out there are some pretty scummy dog owners about. As mentioned we were in a nice spacious spot on the end, but apparently dog owners saw this space as somewhere to let the dogs do their business. Fine, they've got to go at some point, but at least pick it up!! Only saw 1 dog owner pick it up. Unless thing is a strange French thing then it's more of a moan at the people on site than the Staff but it's something to be aware of, if they weren't aware. As it definitely had a 'wiff' about the pitch.

Electric gravel and sand pitch (comfort)

Liked: Everything was great, flat pitch if a little tight to turn into. Water at the pitch and electricity so no long extension leads. Facilities were great and staff friendly. Lovely river walks and a bijou beach as well. A great “loisir” just across the road so an alternative bar if you wanted it.

Disliked: Wednesday nights are DJ nights. Not our music but that’s subjective however, music never needs to be that loud. That was the only negative of a very pleasant stay.

Electric grass pitch (riverside)

Liked: Vlakke plek.

Local attractions

With not only the Dordogne but Charente and Gironde nearby too, this well-placed site has lots for guests to fill their days with. In the Périgord Vert, there are pretty little villages, caves, castles and – perhaps the most popular of all – wine tasting at wineries and vineyards (including spots within 10 minutes’ drive of the site). Saint-Émilion (55 minutes’ drive), in particular, is famed for its vintage wines, and the chateaux, wooded hillsides, streams and vineyard scenery are an added bonus. For top scenery, Brantôme (55 minutes) is also a very fierce contender, with medieval and Renaissance architecture. Stop off at the Forêt de la Double (15 minutes) for a good hike among the oak and hazel. The Grand Etang La Jemaye (20 minutes) in the same forest will also please outdoorsy folks, with its ponds, hiking trails and canoe rental. If you’re hungry after those days in the outdoors, pull up in Échourgnac (15 minutes) for a quick visit to the abbey and to haul the tasty La Trappe cheese back to base.
