It's free, quick and easy!
- Rural Périgord Noir site 10 minutes' drive from Sarlat-la-Canéda
- Rocamadour and the Gouffre de Padirac an hour's drive away
- Heated pool and private fishing lake; summer restaurant and activities
There's history galore in the Périgord Noir: this is an area packed with cliffside castles, caves carved with inscriptions and medieval mazes. In the Dordogne, and located between Sarlat-la-Canéda and Les Eyzies-de-Tayac-Sireuil (10 minutes’ drive from both), the family-friendly Camping Le Moulin du Roch makes a good base to explore it all, and with a good dose of those other holiday essentials (food and outdoor time) as well.
Dordogne trips demand days out on the river for many folk – and certainly a paddle (either along the Dordogne itself or the Vezère) along the water makes a great way to explore. Rent canoes or kayaks 15 minutes' drive away to splash your way between the area's sights.
You’ll want to be savvy with your time on site, as there’s much to keep you occupied, including a heated outdoor pool and games of volleyball or pétanque. Bring your own rod and kit for fishing at the private lake, which is stocked with carp and roach.
The on-site restaurant and snack bar (open through July and August) should keep rumbling bellies at bay, and because no day out gets off to a good start without a decent breakfast, there’s a bread delivery service too, along with a shop for extra supplies.
Through July and August, kids aged 4-12 can get stuck into kids’ activities (five days a week), family games and excursions (four days a week). For extra giggles, quizzes, live music and themed meals are held four nights a week in summer.

Local attractions
There are several historic towns you’ll want to conquer by foot. The fortified town of Sarlat-la-Canéda (10 minutes’ drive) harks back to the medieval ages, with gold-hued Renaissance buildings at every turn. The riverside village and the hilltop castle of Beynac-et-Cazenac (15 minutes) is a photographer’s goldmine too, while the maze-like medieval ruins of the fortress of Château de Commarque (10 minutes) invite more opportunities to get lost in history. Elsewhere, the sculpture-filled 17th-century garden of Eyrignac Manor Gardens (25 minutes) is a space for more leisurely walking.
Dig into more historic settlements at the clifftop site of Roque Saint-Christophe (15 minutes), an original troglodyte village. You can also try to decipher the rock-carved figures etched by the old inhabitants of the caves at nearby Grotte du Sorcier (20 minutes). A larger cave network can be found at Gouffre de Padirac (an hour).
For something of a mystical experience, aim for the the pilgrimage site of Rocamadour (an hour), where you can also access the wildlife park at La Foret des Singes or the birds’ nests at Rocher des Aigles.
