  • Glamping in a converted school bus in the Lapland wilderness
  • On the edge of Oulanka National Park, close to nature trails
  • Hot tub and barbecues on site; easy access to the Karhunkierros Trail
All aboard the big yellow bus… A glamping break at Midnight Sun Skoolie will have you staying in a converted school bus that has swapped the urban streets of New York City for a much more restful spot on the edge of Lapland's Oulanka National Park. It’s peaceful and remote here, no doubt, but public transport is accessible nearby, so you’re not entirely cut off from the world. Adorned with fairy lights both inside and out, the bus stands yellow and proud against its forested setting and has accommodation for up to six people, including bunk beds. Its cosy interior relies heavily on natural materials and has a well-equipped kitchen with views of the forest and a woodburning stove for those chilly Lapland nights. The natural theme runs to the outside bathroom, where a wooden cabin houses a shower cubicle and an incinerator toilet. Outside, you can soak up the wilderness setting from the comfort of the hot tub or get set for a barbecue under the stars (or under the midnight sun – you are in the Arctic Circle, after all). Nature paths lace through the surrounding forest, and there are also cycling and mountain biking trails around. Alternatively, take to the water for rafting on the Savinajoki river, where you’ll have to navigate small rapids and paddle past towering canyons. You can also fish for trout here, but be sure to check permits beforehand. Nature photographers will have plenty to keep them occupied, too, looking for local birdlife and the native wild calypso orchid, maybe nibbling on freshly picked berries as they go…

Local attractions

The Karhunkierros Trail, also known as the Bear’s Trail, is one of Finland’s most popular long-distance paths. If you fancy having a go, the trailhead is just 12km from the site. You’ll need a head for heights, though – there are several hanging bridges to cross, but those who dare will be rewarded with spectacular views of rugged cliffs and forested hills. The ski resort of Ruka (40 minutes’ drive) is a place for summer activities too – head over here to ride the steel sled track or have a go on the zipline. For an unusual thrill, you can ride head first, on your belly, and pretend you’re a superhero on their way to a perilous rescue. Feed the reindeer at Salla Wilderness Park (half an hour), where you can also meet a pack of huskies and go on a sled ride. Other activities available here include a guided midnight hike and a canoe trip on Hangasjärvi lake.
