The North Sea on one side, the Nissum Fjord on the other, and neither more than a kilometre or two away – Nissum Fjord Camping, 15 minutes’ drive from Ulfborg, is in a nifty location indeed for outdoorsy hols in the West Jutland area. Bike rides are the best way to get about in these parts – bring your wheels along (or hire on site) to pedal for a few minutes through the Husby dune plantation to the long, long stretch of white sandy beach beyond, or to little Helm Klink Havn to launch boats to bob around the nature-packed Nissum Fjord. Fittingly for such an area, there are plenty of options for walks, fishing, sailing, surfing and the like nearby; Holstebro and Ringkøbing are half an hour’s drive away for those who’d like to cram in some city culture. Dipped a toe in the sea and declared that’s as far as you’re going? Full immersion swims can be had back on site at the open-air swimming pool, with games of football and playground sessions to dry off afterwards and a big firepit that’s often the focus of sociable evenings watching the flames crackle. Generously sized pitches means plenty of space here for alfresco eats: source supplies for your picnics or barbecues over in Ulfborg, and get a good breakfast cued up for the next day by slipping in an order with the bread delivery service. A little café is niftily located just by the site entrance too for easy coffees and snacks.

Lovely, clean, and friendly campsite with great staff. Guests enjoyed choosing their own spot, free showers, and the handy location near a bike path and beach. Facilities are well-kept. Pool's a bonus. Management's addressing any peak-season shower queues.

Liked First we got a Nice and warm Welcome at the campsite. It is on beautiful quiet location close to the beach and many nice places to visit. Also the restaurant has delicious food to offer. Definitely going back when visiting Denemarken again.

Local attractions

The beach here is a truly excellent one, with kilometre upon kilometre of clean, soft sand and lots of space for paddling and games. Behind the beach is the huge Husby dune plantation, best seen by following the three-kilometre hiking trail (usually accessible to wheelchairs and buggies too, as long as the wind hasn’t swept too much sand up…) Fishing’s a fine activity along the coast, too – Thorsminde (five minutes’ drive), where sea meets lake, being one of the best spots to buy or catch. For swims without any current, slope off to the bathing lake in Stråsø Plantage (half an hour) or head to the covered warm waters and waterslides of Holstebro Badeland (half an hour). Keep things coast-based for a while longer with a trip to the interactive exhibits, workshops and play areas at Kystcentret Thyborøn (40 minutes), then skip next door to stroke slithery sea beasts at Jyllandsakvariet aquarium. Steer away from the sea and trips inland might include footgolf, inflatable sumo and other madcap pursuits at Vesterhavets Fodboldgolf (15 minutes) or arty wanders in Holstebro (half an hour), visiting the museum and seeking out the sculptures around the town.
