- Peaceful eco-friendly riverside lodges with leafy green jungle views
- A 10-minute walk to Tayrona and 50 minutes’ drive from Santa Marta
- Private ensuites and hammock-lined terraces; hiking tours organised
If a hol spent on swaying hammocks beside a river with access to hikes through well-preserved jungle towards Caribbean beaches sounds dreamy, Posadas Ecoturísticas Seineken around a 10-minute walk from Tayrona National Park in Magdalena could be just the ticket: this site has a handful of eco-friendly lodges for laying heads in, built from wood with a palm roof for a tropical feel.
Each one has an ensuite with warm water too (there’ll be no roughing it here…) and the private terraces are prime places for unwinding with a view of the park’s leafy green surrounds. Guests can lift themselves up from said hammock when hunger strikes – a dining room is on site for tasting Colombian cooking like coconut rice and arepas.
If the prospect of swims strikes a chord but the idea of a trek to the beach isn’t quite as appealing (the furthest of Tayrona’s protected stretches of sand are up to a two and a half hour hike away), the Río Piedras river is right beside the site for soaks.
Arriving by bus from Santa Marta (the region’s hub, where intra-city buses and air traffic flies in)? Guests will need to ask the driver to drop them at the San Rafael stop a couple of minutes from the park; this is also where visitors will get a ride to other attractions in the area like the river tubing and sandy Caribbean beaches at Palomino.

Local attractions
Tayrona National Park is the area’s biggest lure, with the best hikes leading to Cabo de San Juan’s stunning beach or to the Pueblito indigenous village. If guests would rather be whisked there astride a horse they can organise a trotting trip from the park’s entrance.
Outside Tayrona, Quebrada Valencia waterfalls are 15 minutes’ drive (plus a walk of around a mile – pack those hiking boots) for dipping into the clear pools at the bottom. For swims without strolls, the seaside town of Buritaca is a 25-minute drive, or blend beaching with city slicking in Santa Marta, a coastal place of colonial architecture, colourful churches and lively nightlife in its squares.
For quieter times, the coffee plantations and hikes through the green surrounds of Minca are an hour from the site; this village also has a hostel claiming to have the biggest hammock in the world if epic lazing is on the cards...
