  • Spectacularly scenic site on the edge of Serra Geral National Park
  • A 10-minute drive from Praia Grande and 55 minutes from Torres
  • Eco-conscious facilities, including common room, kitchen and bar
On the slopes of the Serra Geral mountain range in southern Brazil is a site that will almost certainly entice adventurers, explorers and lots of others besides. The family-friendly Montanha Mágica is about four kilometres from the Santa Catarina town of Praia Grande, and just 600 metres from the edge of Serra Geral National Park. The site is spectacularly well-placed for hiking types. A walking trail entirely on site should get guests started, and lengthier guided hikes also start directly from base. Further afield, trails follow the Malacara riverbed (about two kilometres away) and Itaimbezinho Canyon (about 12 kilometres from the site), while others take hikers from the source of the Mampituba (within about 25 kilometres) to the summit of Pedra Branca. Those who prefer more leisurely hols have plenty to keep them occupied on site. Lazing about and soaking up the stunning views over the countryside towards the oceanside city of Torres comes highly recommended, as does mingling with other guests in the eco-build common room and by the firepits. The combo of mountain air and heady hikes will likely leave guests feeling rather hungry, so make trips into Praia Grande for local eats or to pick up supplies at one of the supermarkets. Back at base, a shared kitchen can be used for cooking, and the eco-build on-site bar – serving speciality beers, regional liqueurs and trail snacks – is a top spot to spend evenings.

Local attractions

Spending time out and about in nature here is a cinch. If Serra Geral National Park doesn’t satisfy, it’s just 25 minutes’ drive to Aparados da Serra National Park where, as well as plenty of trails, there are waterfalls to visit and howler monkeys, ocelots and parrots to keep eyes peeled for. Does that pique interests in more wildlife watching? Nature preserve Parque Tupancy is an hour and 10 minutes from the site, with plenty of capybaras to spot. If longer jaunts are possible it’s a little under three hours to the zoo in Gramado. Closer at hand, the city of Torres can be reached in just under an hour. It’s a must visit for its surf- and swim-friendly sandy beaches and the scenic Guarita State Park. Well-timed stays will coincide with the ballooning festival, so be sure to have camera in hand if that's the case. If that trip to Gramado Zoo is on the cards, stick around the city to visit its museums, model village (Mini Mundo) and its Santa- and snow-themed park, then return via Canela (two hours and 40 minutes from the site) to explore its theme parks, cathedral, and museums dedicated to cars, fashion and the Beatles.
