- Family-friendly site with a modern feel in the famed Međugorje
- Half an hour from city of Mostar; vineyards within 15 minutes
- Restaurant, barbecue area, sports ground, car rental
Whether you’re religious or not, get those walking shoes on and get started on your pilgrimage to Fo’Rest Village Resort, a family-friendly site in Međugorje, 10 minutes’ drive from the town of Čitluk in the Herzegovina-Neretva region.
Međugorje is famous world-over as a religious site, known for apparitions of the Blessed Virgin Mary over the years, and Fo’Rest is well placed for visiting Apparition Hill, Krizevac Hill, the Međugorje shrine, and the village’s other holy spots, all of which are in handy walking distance.
If matters of faith don’t generate blessed feelings, there’s plenty else round here to be thankful for: the stunning Kravice Waterfalls are on the Trebižat river 25 minutes from base for photos and cooling dips in the natural lagoon, and more active types can get out on a kayak to explore the area by river from Capljina, 20 minutes away.
Last Supper cravings can be easily satisfied here with a pitstop in the fab-looking Borovi82 restaurant, or by laying claim to the outdoor barbecue for the evening – otherwise try out local eats in the village.
Don’t fancy bringing the family car along for the trip? There’s a car rental service on site for far-flung day trips, and a self-service laundry should make public-transport-friendly packing an absolute cinch.

Local attractions
Nearby explores should start with a day or two in Mostar, a city 35 minutes’ drive from base. The city’s Old Town is an absolute must for crossing the Stari Most (a reconstruction of the original bridge, which stood from the time of the Ottoman’s to the mid-1990s), visiting Kriva Ćuprija bridge (the oldest in the city), poking around the historical Tepa market and taking in a show at the puppet theatre.
If dream hols skew more towards beach days than city outings, turn instead for the Croatian coast – the site is just under an hour from Gradac, a resort on the 60-kilometre stretch of the Makarska Rivijera, where white sandy stretches beckon and hours of lazing in the sun feel oh so easy.
While in Croatia, make a trip to Crveno Jezero and Modro Jezero, a pair of spectacular lakes a little over an hour from Međugorje – Crveno is the third biggest sinkhole in the world and its cliffs and caves are well worth an explore, while Modro is a top spot for a game of footie (when it’s dry) or a quick dip.
When it’s time to return to Bosnia and Herzegovina, be sure to nab a taste of the local culture – viticulture that is… Within 15 minutes of base, there are a handful of vineyards for a tipple or two (or three).
