It's free, quick and easy!
- Secluded, peaceful pitches on a spectacularly scenic Angus cattle farm
- A 15-minute drive from Kyneton and 25 minutes from Castlemaine
- Granite rocks, paddock dams and a river to explore; dogs allowed
Never has the promise of ‘getting away from it all’ rung truer than at Kinross Metcalfe Farm. A site home to secluded and isolated pitches, with ample room between each one, it’s fab for folk with self-contained setups – whether caravans, motorhomes or tents – seeking a bit of peace.
Not that you’ll be completely alone while here. Birds flit overhead, kangaroos occasionally hop by and spiny anteaters shuffle past as you settle in under the huge old gum trees that cows often graze under.
As you might already have gathered from perusing the pics, this is one scenic site to explore. It’s surrounded by the Metcalfe Hills and strewn with paddocks, huge granite outcrops and a creek replanted with native greenery. Rotational farming methods are used to encourage good soil structure and pasture growth, so it really is rather a lush place.
Hankering after a little warmth come evening? Portable fireplaces are permitted outside fire season (but please bring your own wood). When you need to cool off, head to The Cascades – a five-minute drive or a half an hour wander – for a dip in a natural swimming hole.
As for finding food, choose from the many cafés and restaurants in the centres of Kyneton (15 minutes) and Castlemaine (25 minutes). A local hotel serving country pub-style meals is a 10-minute drive.

Local attractions
Once you’ve splashed about at The Cascades (five minutes’ drive), turn towards Turpins Falls (10 minutes) and immerse yourself in a billabong that's bigger than an Olympic-sized pool.
Rather not drive (or swim)? A short walk from the park leads to Goldfields Road and the Metcalfe Forest, a landscape dotted with former gold mines, where getting a glimpse of treasure hunters wielding metal detectors isn't unheard of. Keep an eye out for precious metals while here or hotfoot it to the mountain biking trails at La Larr Ba Gauwa Park (20 minutes) and whizz about on two wheels.
Speaking of modes of transport, the Metcalfe Vintage Tractor Pull is held in the local reserve. If you’re here on the third Sunday of September, don’t miss learning about the farming cultures of the rural area.
Any other time of year, head over to the bushwalking trails at the Black Hill Reserve (20 minutes), making sure to mosey around one of the largest granite rocks in Victoria. Alternatively, amble through the old Kyneton Botanic Gardens (10 minutes), stopping to smell the native flowers once in a while.
