  • Several wineries within a half-hour drive; Canberra 45 minutes
  • Shared geodesic dome shelter, firepit and camp kitchen for extra fees
The first thing you need to know about Maddara Organic Farm and Art is that its lovely, grassy open spaces interspersed with gum trees are peaceful and spacious. The second thing: sunrises are pretty spectacular over the dam, with the trees giving off a golden glow. The owners purchased the 120-acre (50-hectare) property in 1984 as a place in which to raise a family. Over time, they’ve established an eco-friendly farm, harvesting their own water, electricity and food. If you’re lucky, you might be able to get your hands on a hamper of their own products when they are in season. They’ve also increased the local biodiversity, so you may spot kangaroos and wallabies visiting in the mornings and evenings, or the occasional echidna, rabbit and hare. Birdlife is also varied (and you can expect an early morning singsong from them – what a great alarm). For an extra fee covering cleaning costs, guests can book the geodesic dome in the main paddock, which acts as a shared relaxation space. Around it, and both also available for an extra fee, there’s a firepit with an Argentinian barbecue and a plate for cooking and a camp kitchen with plates, cups, cutlery and other bits and pieces. Firewood is available for a small fee (during non-ban periods only). Park up in the paddock, ready to visit Australia’s capital city Canberra, a 45-minute drive away, or any of the cool-climate wineries within a half-hour’s drive of the farm. There are walks on the property, as well as access to toilets and a hot shower.

Local attractions

When in Canberra, be sure to visit the vast (and architecturally symmetric) Parliament House on Capital Hill, before heading towards the Molonglo River and waterfront museums like the National Gallery of Australia and Questacon - National Science and Technology Centre, featuring child-friendly interactive displays. Across the river is the moving Australian War Memorial, with elegant arcades overlooking a calm pool. As you approach the historic city of Goulburn (55 minutes), you will not miss the Big Merino; this 15-metre statue of a sheep celebrates the local fine wool industry. The hilltop Rocky Hill War Memorial and Museum is housed in a tower with far-reaching views of the Goulburn Wetlands and the surrounding area. Tidbinbilla Nature Reserve (one hour and five minutes) is a protected area with kangaroos, platypus and emus, plus the 17-hectare Eucalypt Forest, where a path takes you past a free-ranging enclosure inhabited by koalas. Or take any of the 20-odd hiking trails crossing this area of wetlands.
