  • Family-run site situated on the Pembrokeshire Coast Path
  • Direct access to Porthsele beach; a mile from Whitesands
  • Farm shop, coffee hut, bar and pizzas available in high season
Fancy a stay on a family-run farm… with direct access to a beach below? Make your way to Pencarnan Farm Caravan and Camping Site, a 96-acre farm overlooking Porthsele beach on the Pembrokeshire coast. The site is on the most western tip of Pembrokeshire, with views of St Georges Channel connecting the Irish and Celtic seas. You'll be in good company with a stay here: generations of the same family have been running the site since the mid-1950s, a holiday spot for guests who return year after year – some with their kids and grandkids now in tow. This place is just the ticket for outdoor adventures too, as it's set directly above Porthsele beach (with private vehicle access so you can cart all your kit along with you). The sea and bay are safe for swimming and kayaking, and there are plenty of rockpools to explore at low tide. If you haven’t got your fill of sea breeze, surfing beach Whitesands is a one-mile walk along the coastal path or, if you’re feeling adventurous, a half-mile swim or kayak from Porthsele. Sorting supplies is easy at the farm too: in the high season, a site shop is on hand with camping and food supplies, wetsuits and logs for beach fires, and a coffee hut opens every day. A bar and pizzas are also available at peak times.

Liked: I stayed here on my own with my two year old twins for our first proper camping (not glamping) experience. I was a bit nervous about it being stressful but we all had a great time. The site is really peaceful and has absolutely stunning views. It's a nice size with both the beach and the toilet block only a 2 minute walk from our tent. The staff were all really friendly and helpful, especially the lady working on the bar, and the pizza was lovely and it was reasonably priced for the area. Other campers were friendly too and I had two offers of help from strangers who noticed I was on my own. It was great to have a tea / coffee bar in the morning serving fresh pastries. Toilets and showers were very clean and there were no queues for either. The disabled toilet also had baby changing with a great little seating area for the other twin to sit on when I changed her sister. There were also kids sinks in the ladies toilets. There's a small kids play section in the courtyard which the girls really loved and was a nice touch on a smaller site. Lovely to see so many dogs around and it was nice that they could be in the courtyard area too. I'll definitely be returning with my husband and our dogs next year. The location is the most stunning view I've ever camped in. This view is basically from a clifftop above a beach, so yes it does get windy. The girls weren't bothered by the wind at all (even at 30mph) but that's something to think about if booking in low season because there seem to be other reviews complaining about the wind which seems unfair when it's expected in the location. As a solo adult the prices are actually very cheap compared to other sites as they only charge £16.50 when other sites often still charge the rate for two adults.

Disliked: Not a dislike but a little kids picket style fence would be a great addition round the play area just to create more of a boundary and pause them a bit from their excitement of coming down the slide and running back to my table. My girls are particularly high energy but I imagine this would be useful for other toddlers too. Kids size pizza or some side orders would be a great addition to the menu.

Liked: The location and view is outstanding. Literally 1 minute walk from the beach which feels like your own private beach. We were a group of families all with mixed style pitches so we were pleased they allowed us on. Great to have pizzeria and coffee shop. Good little shop selling most things you'd need.

Disliked: No communication available at all from the site. I had emailed over a week prior to visiting as the website mentioned that the pizzeria and coffee shop may not be open due to the season but unfortunately they never got back to me. Myself and other families tried contacting them numerous times on the phone but again no answer. A simple answer machine and a response would have been great. When my friend arrived, there was no one at reception at all and waited and waited. In the end they just pitched up without seeing anyone all weekend. Great to have a wash tub to wash wetsuits however this was green and grumpy so couldn't use this. Our pitch was on a hilly site. So didn't make for a comfortable stay. Would use a different field if we decided to stay again in the future.

Liked: Loved absolutely everything about our stay. Staff friendly, relaxed and helpful, lovely big pitch, and the rest of the campers were lovely. Pizza was to die for and the local beers in the bar were spot on. Private beach always a winner for the dog, and us too. We happened to be there on a particularly windy week, kept us fresh and on our toes, so if you go when it’s windy, prepare for it, but it by no means ruined our holiday.

Disliked: Nothing to dislike, amazing!

Local attractions

This is heaven for beach buffs: Porthsele and Whitesands beaches are both within walking distance of Pencarnan. At Porthsele, take your pick from kayaking, surfing and paddleboarding from its sandy shore; if fishing's more your bag you can fish for mackerel, pollock and seabass from the beach and from certain points on the cliff around Pencarnan's land. There are also a few marked climbing spots around the cliffs on the land and some good entry points for coasteering or a coastal swim back to Porthsele beach… followed back at base with a sunset beach fire or barbecue to end the day. The famed surfing centre of Whitesands, a mile away on the coast path from Pencarnan, has a café, deckchairs and wetsuit hire, plus lifeguards in the summer months. Heading south, St Justinian’s (under a mile away along the coast path) is home to RNLI St Davids Lifeboat Station and a departure point for boat trips around, onto and beyond Ramsey Island to spy seals, seabirds, porpoises, whales, dolphins and sharks. Make time too for a trip to the tiny city of St Davids, to browse its shops and galleries and take a look at sixth-century St Davids Cathedral.
