  • Scenic site in the grounds of a country house in rural Carmarthenshire
  • A 20-minute drive to Llandeilo and the Brecon Beacons National Park
  • Boating lake with paddleboard and boat hire
Burrow down between the Brecon Beacons and the Cardigan coast at Little Cwtch Campsite in the quiet Cothi Valley in the Carmarthenshire countryside. Part of the historic grounds of Glanrannell Park House, you’ll be nicely tucked out of earshot of public roads with all the natural beauty and wildlife of the Afon Annell Valley around… look out for red kites overhead and heron, geese, wild ducks, pheasant and moorhens showing off around site. You’ll have plenty of space to stretch your legs here, as the site has a 200-metre river stretch (including a migration corridor), as well as a walled garden, a scenic riverside spinney and kunekune pigs, hens, calves and peafowl pottering around. Looking for something more energetic? The site has a boating lake too with paddleboards and boats for hire. When you fancy mixing things up with a meal out instead, the local pub is 25 minutes’ walk away from the site (or there are several pubs within 10 minutes’ drive of the site). If you're looking to rustle up something for the firepit or the barbecue, there are shops 20 minutes’ drive away too. Dogs are allowed on site but will need to be kept on a leash at all times as there are chickens and peacocks roaming around on site.

Local attractions

Don’t worry about being short of things to do – the only known Roman gold mine in the UK, Dolaucothi Gold Mines, is five minutes’ drive away. There’s a whole host of market towns further out for things like independent shops, pubs, castles and activities – just scout out Llandovery (20 minutes), Llandeilo (20 minutes), Lampeter (20 minutes) and Cardigan (an hour and five minutes). For the active types among you, hike away in Caio Forest (10 minutes), Brecon Beacons National Park (20 minutes) and the wild and remote Mynydd Mallaen (half an hour). For two-wheeled adventures, there are mountain biking trails in Brechfa Forest (35 minutes). After some historic locations? National Trust sites include Dolaucothi Estate (10 minutes), Newton House (25 minutes) and Dinefwr (25 minutes). Castles and houses lie in wait in the Towy Valley (half an hour) too. Of course, save some time to check out the plant life at the National Botanic Garden of Wales (40 minutes) and to make the most of Carmarthen’s (45 minutes) shops, cinema, bowling and museum.

Riverside Meadow non-electric grass tent pitch

Liked: When you arrive you are treated to a friendly welcome and a genuine interest from the family running the site. It is a real haven in the Welsh hills and there are personal touches everywhere you turn. The lake by the house is beautiful and alongside sits a hot tub for those that want to relax with the view. There are hot showers!! There are standup paddle boards available, and my kids were rowing on the lake within minutes playing with the family dog chasing them around in the water. Beside our pitch was a river where the kids skimmed stones and built dams.
Nearby, there is the gold mine at Dolaucothi and there's a great place for breakfast at Tudor Cafe in Llandovery. A walk in Caio woods is always a must, and there are just so many great places to go and explore.
My boys and I slept well every night and when the stars were out it is just a magical place at night.
On Saturday there was a food truck and bar which was a great place to meet and chat.
It is without doubt one of the best places I have ever been camping. Thank you to all the family and others involved.

Disliked: I suppose you could niggle about the portaloos - they can be a bit stinky.. but no complaints other than that.
