  • Riverside location in a secluded countryside setting
  • Close to the Wye Valley and the Forest of Dean
  • Family run with modern amenities and play area
Pitch up by a Welsh river in Monmouthshire's clean, friendly and well-maintained Glen Trothy Caravan Park, in a secluded countryside setting near the village of Mitchel Troy about a mile and a half from Monmouth. You'll be nicely placed here for traipses around the Wye Valley and the lush Forest of Dean – and as it's Wales, the area as a whole is full of ancient castles and abbeys, spectacular scenery and miles of walking trails. Kids will be kept occupied on site at the well-equipped and centrally set play area, with swings, climbing frame, play deck and cabin, ladders, a climbing wall and a sand pit, and grownups are well sorted with the site amenities: Glen Trothy has a launderette, a washing-up room and a toilet and shower block with showers, hand dryers and hairdryers. The facilities are suitable for guests with disabilities. Propane and butane gas are also available, as well as a chemical disposal point.

What customers say

Friendly welcome & great views, with a good play area. Pitches mostly level & spacious. Some found facilities dated (shower charging/temp/hot water issues), and a few pitches uneven with weeds. Bins unclear. Amenities a long walk.

Fully-serviced hardstanding touring pitch

Liked The owner was very pleasant and friendly but we didn't get any sort of instruction paperwork on arrival telling us the specifics or layout of the park etc. Although we parked next to the shower block, we could have done with some info on the area for taking our dog for a toilet break etc. I didn’t know where to take him.

Disliked We booked last minute on the heat wave weekend and so I wasn’t expecting much since it was the last available option in the area and so it was as expected really. Dated and tatty.

The pitches are uneven, cracked old paving slabs, and overgrown with weeds. Tricky to put up an awning but we managed by pegging it into the cracks.

We asked if we could switch to a grass pitch but were told there were no free electrical grass pitches. There were lots of empty grass pitches with electric points around us so I can only conclude that they were out of order.

Shower block was dated and dirty the whole time, though we only stayed one night and it was a busy weekend. ‘Pay for’ showers using 20p’s which we didn’t have, alternatively it jumps up to a £1 for longer which was too long for one person and we only had £1 coins so I just left it running when I left which seemed like a rip off and a waste of water. Also, only 3 of the 4 showers worked as one was out of order. Toilets un-flushed by residents but regular checks and cleaning would solve that issue.

There is a road running alongside which was busy all night but didn’t bother me. My partner who is a light sleeper noticed it but not to the point of keeping him awake all night.

Nonetheless we enjoyed our evening but this was due to amazing, uplifting weather and we packed up and left early to enjoy the forests in the area.

Electric grass touring pitch

Liked Level pitches with plenty of room.

Disliked On site facilities were very tired and in need of upgrading.
Charging for a shower was new to us - never come across this before. The water was scalding and had no thermostat control. You couldn't turn the shower off when you'd finished as it was on a timer - what a waste of money!
No hot water at all in the sinks.
The EHU and water stands were held together with tape.
A large site and the only bins were at the entrance and not signposted at all.
A 40 minute walk to the nearest place where we could eat, drink, buy essentials.

Electric grass touring pitch

Liked On arrival we were met by the owner who was very easy to talk to. Had a choice of where we wanted to pitch on the grass , as it was hot we pitched in the shade. Pitches are a good size, facility’s nice and clean. Had a nice walk off site up the lane with the dogs … would definitely use this site in the future

Liked My very first trip in our new caravan and it couldn’t have gone better. The site was well laid out and the site manager Fiona was extremely pleasant and helpful. She was very happy to give recommendations on the local area and knew her stuff!
In the morning all I could hear was the birds singing and was nice and quiet which to me is what would look for in a caravan park.
I can’t comment on the showers or toilets because I didn’t use them and I was too old to use the fantastic looking playground for children.
For a busy bank holiday weekend and a very last minute booking on my part it really was a lovely site!

Local attractions

This is walking land… Monmouthshire has over 1,000 miles of public footpaths to investigate, and walks all over the county including a couple around Glen Trothy's local village of Mitchel Troy, through woods and farmland and with views right across Wales and across the border to Herefordshire. County town Monmouth, the birthplace of Henry V, is these days a Fair Trade town with many independent shops, regular markets, cafés and restaurants alongside chain shops, the Monmouth Museum and the Savoy Theatre, believed to be the oldest working theatre in Wales. If you'd rather get a bit more active, the River Wye is around for kayaking and paddleboarding (and fishing for more contemplative times), and golf is available nearby. Too tame? Take a tandem paraglide flight off the Blorenge hill in the Brecon Beacons National Park. If the weather is a bit drizzly, piles of indoor attractions are around too, like the museums of Abergavenny, Monmouth or Chepstow or a castle visit to Caldicot and its country park, Tretower Court, Goodrich or Raglan.
