  • Peaceful and family-friendly Glamorgan site bordering the River Taff
  • Castell Coch 10 minutes’ drive; Cardiff city centre 20 minutes
  • Communal kitchen and modern facilities; pub 20 minutes’ walk
Fancy a Glamorgan base with easy access to river fishing or wild swimming amid ancient woodland and peaceful valleys? Introducing Garth Glamping, 20 minutes’ drive from Cardiff city centre and bordering the River Taff at the foot of Garth Hill. Here you also have several fields – each framed by oak and beech – to explore, where you can exercise any four-legged pals and let the kids run around generally being kids. Helpful on-site facilities at this peaceful waterside spot include a pristine modern toilet block and shower enclosure a short stroll from the pitches, and a bottled water station for refilling your flasks and coolers. You'll also have use of a fridge/freezer, hob, kettle and gas barbecue in the communal kitchen area, where there’s a full set of crockery, cutlery, pots and pans and washing-up supplies – in short, everything you need for whipping up a simple supper or firing up the barbecue for an alfresco feast. When you’re ready to explore, follow marked woodland trails or wander quiet country lanes in the surrounding farmland. Cycle hire can be arranged locally if you’re after two-wheeled adventures, but when you’d rather simply sink into a deckchair with a glass of local craft cider and listen for the tawny owls, well, that’s all good too. There’s a pub 20 minutes’ walk from the site gates, and another one, plus a few shops, in the village of Pentyrch (10 minutes’ drive).

Liked peaceful and tranquil site, exceptional clean shower and toilet. Great communal kitchen with great facilities and bottled water and tea. Very friendly, helpful hosts, who went the extra mile and lent us their buggy when we forgot ours! Local pub has great atmosphere. Bell tent

Liked I’m really local to the campsite but chose to camp here as I had my partner and her two children come visit from Ireland to Wales for 2 weeks, and they expressed that they wanted to camp during their stay. Our first camp was a wild camp in Brecon, staying in my small campervan. They loved it and wanted to camp again before they left. So at the end of their stay I decided to choose something closer and a little more ‘glam’ as they were flying home the next day. This campsite and a stay in their glamping tent was the perfect final night of their stay. They were blown away by the location and the small touches such as ear plugs, eye masks, drinks and marshmallows, the tools for the firepit/BBQ, the complimentary water bottles, the outdoor games…and so much more. My partner is American and she was confused by other campsites we’ve been to, calling them glorified car parks 🤣 but she said this campsite was perfect and just what she imagined a campsite would be. Even though I’m local to the site I will definitely be back as I’m always looking for nice places just to spend a night or two in my van :)

Disliked We were late checking in so couldn’t purchase more wood from the organisers. There was just enough wood left for a small fire, but could have done with a little bit more.

Non-electric grass campervan, tent or trailer tent pitch

Liked Really pretty campsite with good facilities. Lots of space for everyone. Train noise isn't bad at all considering it's right next to the track. We had to bring our dog with us for the first night and unfortunately some inconsiderate ****er let their large vicious dog of the lead who charged over and attacked our dog. The campsite owner was brilliant and kicked these horrible people off site immediately.

Non-electric grass campervan, tent or trailer tent pitch

Liked Great location, friendly owners. Used as a base for the Principality Stadium. I like d the communal kitchen and there was a nice river running past the site where the dog could cool off.

Disliked Only one shower and one toilet but they were in the process of building more.

Bell tent

Liked Had a lovely time staying here. Really easy way to do a bit of camping without any faff. A lovely taster for the first time visiting Wales. We turned up with nothing but some food and basically had everything we needed for the stay.

Bell tent was comfy, the Pub in town - Gwaelod Y Garth inn was a great recommendation, local ales and great food. The welcome marshmallows were a nice treat in the evening on the fire pit. You get a lovely greeting by a whole field of curious cows as you head down the driveway to the site.

We came in by foot and got the train in from Cardiff. We walked down from Treforest estate station, which was a little more hilly vs coming up from Taffs Well but well worth the walk through the forest and along the river.

Worth keeping in mind that being this easy to get to, means there's the low hum of the A470 near by and trains do run along the ridge behind the tents till just after midnight. But the supplied ear plugs and eye masks work a treat if thats an issue.

There's a little kitchen onsite and with a supply of tea/coffee and bottled water to get you going in the morning. Few families car camping at the other end of the field but we had plenty of space to ourselves. No wifi but had full bars of Mobile data. There were clean toilets and a shower next to the communal area with more being built when we stayed.

Jordan was super friendly and helpful before and during the stay. Would both recommend this place and will definitely be staying here again to do some of the walking paths around Garth hill.

Non-electric grass campervan, tent or trailer tent pitch

Liked The location was beautiful. It is also very convenient to travel into Cardiff by train as there is a station within 15 walk. Facilities were clean and modern. The river is a real bonus and the nearby pub was very popular with locals and visitors. The staff were friendly and accommodating.

Disliked There is some noise from traffic and trains but it didn’t bother us.

Local attractions

From your pitch, follow waymarked trails up the Garth (20 minutes’ walk) for views over Cardiff and the Vale of Glamorgan. The 55-mile Taff Trail (for walkers and cyclists) passes close by too, so you can follow the scenic section to Pontypridd on largely traffic-free paths alongside the river. Heritage-lovers can tour the extraordinary Castell Coch (10 minutes’ drive), an ornate folly combining a medieval castle with Gothic-Victorian additions, or have a nose around Caerphilly Castle (15 minutes) with its drawbridges and battlements. Also well worth a visit is St Fagans National Museum of History (20 minutes), an open-air folk museum recreating Welsh life through historic buildings and crafts workshops. If the kids aren't taken with all that history, test their wits in themed escape games at Cardiff’s Puzzled Escape Rooms, or take them to Tenpin Cardiff Nantgarw (both 10 minutes) for bowling, arcade games and fast food in the diner. These also make great rainy day choices if the weather turns on you.
