  • Bespoke adults-only shepherds huts in the Anglesey countryside
  • On National Cycle Route 5, 15 minutes’ drive away from the coast
  • Visit the four pet alpacas; secure bicycle storage on site
Throw open the door, say good morning to the alpacas and get the ball rolling on a barbecued breakfast. The adults-only shepherd's huts at Shepherds Retreat in rural Anglesey are next door to a field with four pet alpacas named George, Max, Olaf and Nero – and each one of the huts comes with its own ensuite bathroom, outdoor barbecue area and indoor kitchen. Flop onto the comfortable Hypnos double bed, complete with cosy bedding and fluffy towels, or first things first, freshen up in the ensuite bathroom. The latter has a toilet, sink, shower, heated towel rail and bathroom products such as hair and body wash, conditioner and hand wash. Then, decide between ferreting through the complimentary welcome pack or dividing your things between the storage drawers under the bed, the bedside cabinet or the hanging space. Hopefully, you’ve packed your cycling shorts, for Shepherds Retreat is right on National Cycle Route 5, and there’s secure bicycle storage on site subject to availability. It probably won’t be long until you decide to have an alfresco meal, as each shepherd’s hut has outdoor seating with a firepit and barbecue area (bring your own barbecue or purchase a disposable barbecue from the site). There’s also the option to cook indoors. The kitchen is equipped with a single induction hob, fridge, microwave, kettle, toaster, cafetière, teapot and plenty of pots, pans, utensils, crockery, cutlery and glassware. Washing-up and cleaning equipment are also provided. From the free car park, it's a 15-minute drive to the A55, which is handy for getting around Anglesey. On foot, it's a 10-minute walk to Llanerch-y-medd, where there's a small shop, pubs and a café. If it's time to unwind instead, the huts have wifi, a smart TV with Freeview and a comfortable dining area.

Local attractions

This central spot on the Isle of Anglesey is certainly handy… You could start by visiting spots to the north, like Llyn Alaw (five minutes’ drive), a splendid birdwatching spot, or Mynydd Parys | Parys Mountain Copper Mine (10 minutes), one of many historical landmarks in Aglesey. On foot, explore via the Anglesey Coastal Path (from 15 minutes’ drive). There are some stunning stretches past the Bwa Gwyn (half an hour) sea arches and the Aberffraw (25 minutes) dunes, or towards Llanddwyn Island (45 minutes). While you're out and about, you may hear a lot of talk around Beaumaris Castle (half an hour). This incomplete castle has spiral staircases and stunning mountain views. Thinking of stopping at a beach too? Bae Lligwy (20 minutes) is a large sandy beach with dunes. Other ripe pickings include Traeth Benllech (20 minutes) and Porth Dafarch (25 minutes).
