Retreating to Snowdonia? Then you should probably take a peek at this place: an exclusive family-run smallholding on the western fringes of Snowdonia National Park, tucked into the hillside above the hamlet of Rhydyronen, Snowdonia Retreats and with views of the Dysynni valley and the blue sea. But perhaps the best bit about this place is that you can arrive right on site in style via a vintage steam train from the Talyllyn Railway, three miles away at Tywyn or Aberganolwyn eight miles away; request to stop at the Tynllwyn Hen halt, and the friendly guard will guide you to your carriage. This secluded spot is great for long walks and bike rides around the surrounding countryside too; for starters, there's a nice 30-minute circular walk along the riverbank and through open fields. Facilities on site include a communal barbecue, as well as a family room with board games, comfy sofa, billiard table, piano, table and chairs, a kitchen and cooking kit including pans, crockery and cutlery. Guests also have use of an electric shower and a flushing toilet. The nearby town of Tywyn has plenty of handy local amenities, including a supermarket and a good local that serves tasty pub meals, and the site is almost equidistant to the larger towns of Dolgellau and Machynlleth and its weekly market.

Local attractions

Rural but by no means isolated, Tynllwyn-Hen farmhouse lies high up on a peaceful hill at the head of the Dysynni valley, with views of the hills around Cadair Idris and to the west over the sea. The coastal railway line runs a regular service from Shrewsbury to Porthmadog, stopping at the nearby seaside town of Tywyn. The long sandy beach there is safe enough for surfers of all abilities, attracting seasoned pros when the surf's at its best (usually around one to two hours either side of high tide). The owners of Snowdonia Retreats highly recommend a visit to the lovely seaside town of Aberdyfi, seven miles away, as well as Tonfannau Motorcycle Racing Circuit and Harlech Castle. After a trip out to Cadair Idris mountain range, stop at Dolgellau for a spot of afternoon tea, and try a bit of pony trekking at Bwlchgwyn Farm.
