Idyllic Woodland Pitches
Secluded personal pitches
Our tent pitch, so separate from any other campers, felt very private
Our riverside pitch, under two great oaks, with ponies in the field on each side

  • Simple pitches on a peaceful 75-acre historic farm estate
  • Within Eryri (Snowdonia) National Park; Dolgellau 10 minutes' drive
  • Easy access to the Mawddach Trail and local walking/bike trails
Spacious pitches… seaside strolls… Eryri (Snowdonia) National Park… if such phrases fill your heart with glee, you should be pretty content at Cefn Coed. This spacious site is in a gorgeous Gwynedd location, within the national park and about 10 minutes’ drive from both the market town of Dolgellau and the coast at Fairbourne. If you’ve come to north Wales for the scenery, you should be pleased with your lot here: it’s in a sheltered valley of ancient oak woodlands, close to where the slopes of Cadair Idris roll down to the banks of the Mawddach Estuary. The site is part of a historic Welsh farm estate with 75 acres of farmland and forest – and the nearest neighbours are almost a mile away. Miles of walking, cycling and riding paths are easily accessible, including the famed Mawddach Trail (follow it all the way to Dolgellau, Fairbourne and Barmouth, or to a tiptop local pub/restaurant). There is also a circular route just above the property with some further viewpoints. Facilities on site include an amenities block with showers, toilets and a washing-up area. Filtered mountain spring drinking water is provided near the farmhouse, along with a freezer for ice packs and a facility for charging phones or small battery packs. During high season, the on-site bar serves local ales and cocktails. There is a food truck during high season where you can pre-order woodfired pizzas and morning coffee and croissants. Book yourself onto an on-site course or activity too, like guided local walks, bushcraft, sound baths and foraging courses. The distance between the car park and pitches is variable and parking by the pitch can't be guaranteed. Pitches are allocated on a first-come-first-served basis; if you have a particular request please let the site know and they'll do their best to accommodate you.

Beautifully secluded wild camping, loved for spacious pitches & calm vibes. Staff are friendly, facilities clean with cool extras like the bar & Thai food. Great for walks, though facilities are basic & a walk from some spots. Most loved it and want to come back.

Field non-electric grass tent or campervan pitch

Liked Remoteness and uniqueness

Disliked Over crowded and way too occupied and not the peaceful pitch up we were hoping for, and despite being told I would get a refund for only using the fire pit one night, the refund was not returned.

Field non-electric grass tent or campervan pitch

Liked Nice bar and pizza area. Useful shop. If you want to camp in a private bit of woodland then these looked nice. We stayed on the field.

Disliked The site was busy as expected however the facilities were insufficient for the numbers of units. It was also a shame that whilst walking through the forest we saw that behind the site there was a lot of ‘dumped’ stuff spoiling the woods making it an eye sore. We felt that it is was expensive for the field camping and that the walk to the toilet block was too long. A portable arrangement for busy summer period would have made a big difference, as per the many pop up sites we’ve stayed on.

Field non-electric grass tent or campervan pitch

Liked The location is beautiful and it's very quiet and peaceful. There's a path through the woods straight to the Mawddach trail which is fantastic. Great for cycling and walking.
The people who worked there were lovely, the facilities were good and there was a useful shop as well as food and drink onsite.

Disliked I didn't like all of the smoke in the evenings from all of the fire pits. I don't know if everyone had wet wood or something but it got really smokey and coming from the city I was hoping for some fresh air.

Field non-electric grass tent or campervan pitch

Liked We liked that it was so laid back, very friendly and just a quirky little site. It was our first time camping and very last minute so we went with what was cheapest and honestly, I’m glad we chose it!
We didn’t really stay on site much as we had family staying in Barmouth but the views in the morning were beautiful and I loved the nature surrounding the site.
It was nice to see people walking around with the foraging baskets and the atmosphere was nice.

Disliked I’m not going to say what I disliked but I’d like to offer some suggestions for improvement..
the toilets were quite a far walk for a family with two smaller children, especially at night, so we had to keep driving up, which made us feel bad for those campers who were asleep. Toilet spaces were super small as well so getting in and out with little ones was difficult, especially when trying not to touch anything as some campers weren’t very clean unfortunately. It was also a pain opening and closing the gates constantly, especially in the dark due to the animals on site, and as much as we wanted to try one of the delicious looking pizzas, we couldn’t afford to buy as many as we needed for our family as it would’ve cost us so much.

Wooded non-electric grass and earth campervan pitch

Liked Beautiful pitch and the facilities were very good. Option to rent a fire pit was perfect. Amazing walks from the campsite. Friendly staff and the onsite bar and food options were great.

Disliked The carpark for check-in can get a bit congested.

Oak Woodland non-electric forest floor tent pitch

Liked Everybody was extremely nice and helpful. The site is very nice, our pitch was quiet and private. Very good facilities, clean toilets, showers and washing up area. A well stocked bar and also a shop, there is a communal freezer too. We had a really good pizza one of the nights, sourdough base cooked in a wood fired oven. Amazing walks available, the estuary is only a couple of minutes away.

Disliked Nothing!

Local attractions

Ready to ramble? Take a wander around Abergwynant Woods, 20 minutes’ walk away, or get set to conquer Cadair Idris, the slopes of which you can reach on foot in a couple of hours. The New Precipice Walk (15 minutes’ drive) is a fab choice for spectacular views; if you’re more into moving at speed, make for the mountain bike trails at Coed-y-Brenin forest park (also 15 minutes). For less energetic days out, take fishing rods off to the banks of Cregennan Lakes (15 minutes) or Tal-y-llyn Lake (20 minutes) or make a break for the seaside at Fairbourne (10 minutes), where you can ride the heritage railway for a properly chilled-out time, or Barmouth (20 minutes). Keen to see what lies beneath? Take a boat ride into a world of subterranean dragons and the like at King Arthur’s Labyrinth (25 minutes). Back up in the daylight, ancient Cymer Abbey (10 minutes) and the fab Italianate village of Portmeirion (40 minutes) are top ports of call.
