  • Semi-wild pop-up campsite with spectacular views of Snowdonia peaks
  • A 15-minute drive to the Welsh Coast Path and 25 minutes to Llanberis
  • Peaceful grass pitches with a pub and shop within five minutes’ drive
At a lofty 900 feet above sea level on a Welsh smallholding, the pop-up camping field at Gwynedd's Parc Newydd has unbeatable views up to Mynydd Mawr in Snowdonia National Park and right over to the Isle of Anglesey. What a spot to hole up for a semi-wild camping experience not far away from Caernarfon. Keen to get out exploring? Mountain walks, museums and castles are all within easy reach. Prefer a lazy time pottering about on site? There’s always something different to see, whether it is birds soaring above, sunset over the sea or the Milky Way glittering in the sky on clear nights. You don’t have far to go to stock up on supplies either. The local village of Waunfawr (five minutes’ drive, 40 minutes’ walk) has an essentials shop and also an inviting pub serving decent burgers and craft beers from its microbrewery – it might be time to ditch the car and make a night of it. Basic amenities on the spacious and level camping field run to an on-site portable toilet and washing-up area – so please bear in mind there are no showers. You’ll also need to bring torches as there is no electricity and zero street lighting, and after dark it’s … very dark indeed. Parc Newydd is also a quiet site, so if you’re looking for masses of entertainment or late-night parties, this is not the spot for you. Due to sheep on the smallholding, dogs are not permitted.

Local attractions

To get out on Snowdonia hills, all you need to do is open the gate from the campsite and you’re away. Parc Newydd is right on the routes for the long-distance North Wales Pilgrim’s Way, which wends its way past tiny rural churches, as well as the Snowdonia Slate Trail through spectacular mountain scenery. It’s also only 15 minutes’ drive to meet up with the Welsh Coast Path at Dinas Dinlle Beach on the Llŷn Peninsula. If you’d rather let something else do all the hard leg work, board the Snowdon Mountain Railway at lakeside Llanberis (25 minutes' drive) for a leisurely chug up to the summit of the tallest mountain in Wales. Budding daredevils can have loads of fun zooming down zipwires and exploring the quarry at Zip World Penrhyn Quarry (35 minutes), while less challenging days out can be had exploring deep underground in the National Slate Museum (25 minutes) or touring the mighty medieval stronghold of Caernarfon Castle (15 minutes).

Liked: Rhiannon and her family were so hospitable and kind. I have to admit the highlight was their little Jack Russell who was so sweet and loved a belly rub! Good 4G coverage too, just in case it's of interest to people :)

Disliked: more poo in the field than we would have liked, but when you're staying in a field, it's to be expected really!
