Kingfisher cabin (seven person)

Liked: Honestly- we are not seasoned campers, far from it. So when the kids (4&11) pestered us to go camping, I had to give in. I hunted for a middle ground and came across the Kingfisher cabin. You know the saying something sounds too good to be true. After reading the brilliant reviews I had doubts but oh my…. The place is serene, the family are just the loveliest people you could meet, the alpacas are soooo cute, everywhere is spotlessly clean (yes-even the compost toilets) and everything was just perfect. I can’t fault the place! Within 30 minutes of being there, the lovely Molly had taken the children off to feed the alpacas, nothing was too much trouble. The kids absolutely loved it. They were talking about that little experience all the way home. I’m so grateful for the memories you’ve given us. The food in the pub was delicious, especially the blackberry and apple crumble (yum). We will definitely be back. Thank you for an amazing, comfortable stay. Keep up the hard work you do, because it really shows. It’s not often you can see passion shine through like at your place. It genuinely feels like you’ve opened your home to your guests.

Disliked: I disliked coming home. The only teeny tiny bit of constructive criticism I could give (certainly NOT a dislike) is showers would mean we could have a longer stay with you. And another little table in the cabin for drinks etc would be helpful. I was so worried about the children knocking something over. To anyone reading these reviews and considering booking - do it. You won’t regret it.

Poppy's Patch bell tent

Liked: What a beautiful place to stay. We stayed in the poppy bell tent, I was a little concerned about the river with my toddler when booking this but when we arrived there was enough bushes and brambles to keep him a safe distance away. Site was well maintained and the tent was spotless when we arrived. I liked the fact they had the pub on site for food and a break away from the rain. Food was nice and they had a children's menu. Although they had compost toilets the pub toilets were open during pub open hours.

Non-electric grass tent, campervan or trailer tent pitch (family, maximum 6 metres)

Liked: Beautiful quiet setting on a river with pub having a beer garden with lovely views of the bridge and river. Composting toilets were kept clean and food at the pub was good with Saturday night being pizza night. Lovely pub and campsite hosts with entertaining pub locals. Good free WiFi at pub but nothing at the camping pitches. Driving in locality: Betws-y-Coed - approx 25mins Bala - approx 20 mins Llangollen- approx 35mins Allen Reservoir - approx 15mins

Disliked: The drainage could be better on the pitches. After three days of intermittent rain we had churned up our pitch with our campervan and almost got stuck trying to get out

Bed-in-a-shed microlodge

Liked: Everything, the family were lovely, the little Shed was cosy but adequate, the campsite was super and the Alpacas were so wonderful to wake up next to. We loved it all. We enjoyed seeing so many waterfalls in the area too!

Bed-in-a-shed microlodge

Liked: I rented a bed in a shed, its exactly what it says it is. Its a shed with a bed in it. The bed was firm and comfortable, the bedding was clean as was the shed. It was a bit damp given the bad weather we had been having and i prepared for that taking my own light sleeping bag to put in the bed. I had a perfect nights sleep listening to the sounds of the river running by. The hosts/ staff were excellent, very welcoming and helpful. Facilities on site are minimal, but adequate for an overnight stay. I ate and drank in the pub with friends and had an enjoyable night. I will return.

Liked: I liked being next to a beautiful river and the sound of it lulling me to sleep. The owners were friendly and even provided me with a hot water bottle and a blanket in case I was cold:) The amenities were spotlessly clean and the food in the Crown inn was delicious. Nice friendly local pub!

Local attractions

There's plenty to do hereabouts, whether you're inclined to go off gallivanting through the hills of Snowdonia National Park (from 15 minutes' drive), boating on Bala lake (20 minutes) or heading out to see cool castles like the one at Conwy (45 minutes). The village of Llanfihangel Glyn Myfyr is in a central location in North Wales, so both the north and west coasts of the country are within an hour's drive too. If you've got kids or teens to keep entertained, popular options to keep them busy include Go Below Underground Adventures (20 minutes), a caving outfit based in Betws-y-Coed, the woodland rides and activities at Zip World Fforest (25 minutes) or taking a trip to see the many species of animals and birds at the Welsh Mountain Zoo (50 minutes). For something silent and serene instead, take a soothing stroll around the grounds of Clocaenog Forest (five minutes; free parking available at Bod Petryal car park), keep your eyes and ears peeled for osprey at Llyn Brenig (15 minutes) or appreciate the horticultural offerings on display at Caerau Gardens (25 minutes).
