  • Peaceful site on a working farm just outside Llanwrtyd Wells
  • Half an hour's drive from Elan Valley and Brecon Beacons
  • Easy access from the A483; pubs and shops half a mile away
Make your way to a peaceful site on a working farm in the Powys countryside… when you roll up to Plas Y Cadno, you’ll be joining a small place just on the edge of lovely little Llanwrtyd Wells (the smallest town in Wales, fact fans) and within easy reach of the Brecon Beacons and Cambrian Mountains. A quick flick through the pics here will give you a glimpse into the fine scenery that awaits for those heading out for a walk, a bike ride, a horseback hack or some other form of outdoor activity; this is a part of the world that’s peppered with old Roman roads, teeny chapels, ancient standing stones and all sorts of other little bits of intrigue (as well as some stunning scenery and abundant wildlife, of course). Middle of nowhere then? Not at all. Play Y Cadno is easily accessed just off the A483, with the town centre’s shops, pubs and other amenities about half a mile away. That’s particularly handy for picking up supplies to light a barbecue or campfire (both of which are permitted here to warm your evenings). Facilities on site are fairly simple, stretching just to unisex showers and toilets. Dogs are allowed to join you on site, but they’ll need to be kept on a lead to avoid scaring the neighbouring sheep.

Non-electric hardstanding and grass pitch

Liked: A lovely, laid back and friendly site. Showers were lovely and hot, clean and loos clean. Lucy, owner, and her partner, were lovely. Added bonus, if you into it, there is a standing stone near the site and ley line. Great site for access to big snorkeling with transport to big. Local pub, great atmosphere with blues singing from dangerous Dave. Short drive to beautiful wild swimming sites. Will definitely use again.

Non-electric hardstanding and grass pitch

Liked: Really appreciated the flexible arrival and departure times and the fire pits and enjoyed being surrounded by sheep in a location perfect for Llanwrtyd Wells.

Disliked: The price reflected the facilities which are minimal. There are toilets with empty soap dispensers and a shower with a long abandoned air about it. There is a scarcity of flat ground and although in one direction the views are good in the other it is more of a building site and noise from the road can clearly be heard.

Non-electric hardstanding and grass pitch

Liked: The location was good. We wanted to be fairly close to Elan valley. The campsite was basic but had good warm showers. Shower layout good with hook and bench.... so no need for balancing on one foot whilst dryng. Nice countryside views if looking away from farm and building site from the top. Top pitches fairly flat. Great there are picnic benches and fire pits

Disliked: Very basic and not very well signposted struggles to find this site and amenities not very well sign posted. Found 2 bins but not recycling? Facilities basic.

Disliked: The site was very basic and a bit of building site which made £30 per nite seem quite expensive. Things were not signposted.... had almost given up on cold water tap. My daughter couldn't find toilets. There were tons of midges.

Local attractions

Poke your nose into some history tales… the ruins of Llandovery Castle (20 minutes’ drive) were once a grand 13th-century fortress and the hilltop Carreg Cennen Castle (45 minutes) is another castle that has crumbled since the 13th century. At the Dolaucothi Gold Mines (half an hour), you could learn about Roman mining tricks and get down underground to see them yourselves. Elsewhere, the National Cycle Museum (25 minutes) is about the timeline of the bicycle instead. If you’re looking to get a taste of the local landscapes, you’ll be in for a treat. Elan Valley walks (half an hour) are especially scenic, with six dams around the valley the disused track Elan Valley Railway now used as a track for walkers, and Llyn Brianne (45 minutes) is another hot spot for hikers to take in lake views as they make their way around. The Brecon Beacons National Park (half an hour) has many more spectacular walks, including the climb up Pen y Fan (an hour), or there’s the Red Kite Feeding Station in Rhayader (25 minutes) to see red kites being fed. Of course, for hikes coastal-style or watersports, the Pembrokeshire coastline (an hour) is also within driving distance.
