Fancy a bonnie old time in bonnie Scotland? Make haste for Bonnybridge Eco Camping and Glamping, a family-friendly site 10 minutes’ drive from Falkirk. Eco-conscious guests can rest assured their carbon footprints are minimal at this site on a family-run livery yard. But don’t think that off-grid means basic – the site runs on solar panels and wind turbines, so there's no need to wave goodbye to tech for stays, and there’s rainwater harvesting for showers and washing up (plus a drinking fountain to help you stay hydrated). For even more eco-conscious hols, minimising car journeys by spending loads of time on site is easily possible too, as nature fixes can be had by meeting the friendly resident Shetland ponies or by wandering the fields (keeping a lookout for newts, toads, butterflies, pheasants and deer). When it comes time to satisfy hungers, there’s a small shop selling free-range eggs and basic essentials in the office eco pod, and the shops of Bonnybridge village are a 10-minute bike ride away. If a break from self-catering is needed, make the trip into Falkirk (10 minutes’ drive or a 25-minute cycle) to try out some of the restaurants or cafés.

Local attractions

For modern icons of Scotland, there’s the Falkirk Wheel (five minutes' drive) and the spectacular Kelpies (20 minutes) – otherwise blend past and present with explores of museums, galleries, castles and science centres in Glasgow and Edinburgh (30 minutes and 55 minutes away respectively). There’s lots to do nearby if time in nature is a draw, starting with Bonnyfield Nature Reserve, a little over five minutes’ drive from the site for bikes and wanders. Not satisfying outdoorsy cravings? Leisurely wanders – and distractions for little kids – await in the lovely Dollar Park gardens, 10 minutes away. Animal fans can get up close and personal with exotic reptiles, bugs and mammals at ZooLab Jungle Rooms, 15 minutes from base, and there are bigger experiences close by too – Blair Drummond Safari Park, Deep Sea World and Briarlands Farm are all less than 40 minutes from the site. Digging around the past is as simple as one would expect from a country famed for its castles too… The spectacular Callendar House (a 19th-century mansion built in the French Renaissance style) is 15 minutes away, and the Dunmore Pineapple and the historic re-enactments at Duncarron Medieval Village are both within half an hour.

The Paddock non-electric grass tent or trailer tent pitch

Liked: Great eco site lovely pitches and we'll kept site, good parking and immaculate shower and toilet facilities. Great location for surrounding sites, well stocked on site shop and lovely hosts.

Disliked: Due to being an eco site no freezer facilities or power points but that's understandable. No parking next to pitches which can be a chore when setting up and packing up.

The Paddock non-electric grass tent or trailer tent pitch

Liked: Appeared a nice set up camp site. Children playing in the ‘Deluxe area’

Disliked: Sadly, on arrival owner seemed more concerned we had missed the £2 for 1 dog extra payment. We paid immediately & then a smile. Has the owner actually ever Camped! Accept eco friendly, a few steps too far, where Health measures in a communal space should be considered. Animal Poo on the deluxe area x6. Not outside cold tap.. only essential water use m allowed from a bought in Aqua water system for drinking or cooking use at a non eco carbon footprint cost, but not plugged in to keep cool.(their animals have a mains cold water water but not humans paying to stay!- bizarre! A communal hand towel in the bathrooms for all to use instead of paper towels. Hand soap but no hand gel. Showers x 2 for whole site- water far too hot & erratic, no mixer- potential scald’s on young children.. no cold tap on sink in shower room either so bring yr own bottle to use to brush yr teeth as advised not drinking water. Nice few families there, drinking & socialising til nearly 1am.. no advice to consider others anywhere. Finally had to have left by 10.30 so a rush to shower.. eat breakfast & break camp. Lots of flies on paddock camping.. did speak to owner as a few comments of concern. Her answer - it’s eco friendly!!

From the manager: Whilst we appreciate reviews are personal opinion, we do respond to reviews which are factually incorrect and contain mistruths. Firstly our site is located on a farm in the Scottish countryside and is ran entirely off grid. We have no mains utilities, contrary to your presumption. The water cooler meets all statutory requirements for provision of drinking water on a commercial premises, there is no requirement to provide electrically cooled water. We are a small site, therefore 2 showers is more than sufficient and there is operation signage within the showers which clearly states to keep the water flowing to avoid hot/cold blasts as the system restarts, it is helpful if campers take the time to read signage. There is no requirement to provide hand gel and single use hand towels as we have hand wash and towels which is a superior method of cleaning your hands. As stated we are located in the countryside and whilst you were complaining I did advise we have deer visit the site during the night but you were adamant the site was littered with dog poop. Maintenance and cleanliness of the site and facilities is paramount and something we take great pride in. We walked the site extensively after you left and found 1 x deer poop which was promptly lifted. There is very little we can or will do about the wildlife and insect population in fact we welcome these on our site. We have a 24 hr contact number which we are contactable on should any matters arise which need our attention out of hours and not having been alerted , heard any noise ourselves during late checks or during the night we can hardly be responsible for other campers behaviour. Our quiet times are listed in our terms and conditions and it would not be prudent to litter the site with signs to cover every eventuality. Whilst you were making us aware of your distaste for the site, we were very polite and courteous towards you, and tried to explain the measures we would take to check the site etc, however this did not appease your disgruntlement.Never at any time did we respond with “its eco friendly”. Finally, when checking you in we were more than welcoming and amended your booking to include your dog, absolutely no problems at all, and if you care to remember we gave your dog lots of pats. Had we known asking you to pay £2 for your dog would cause so much disgust we would have told you to keep it. It is not pleasant to receive personal derogatory remarks at work but if doing so online makes you feel better about yourself, we are glad we have managed to assist you with this.

Liked: Small, friendly campsite. The toilets and showers were very clean and there was a baby changing station in the toilet block. Particular highlight was the two extremely friendly cats and a chicken! The camping spaces were nice and flat, with grass and soft soil that made it easy to get tent pegs in!
