  • Wildlife haven in the Tay Forest Park: deer and red squirrels on site
  • Indoor pool, sports courts, arcade games and toddlers' pool sessions
  • Pond, adventure playground, bar, restaurant and evening entertainment
Early risers may discover deer grazing outside their windows at Tummel Valley Holiday Park, near Pitlochry in Perthshire. Buried deep in the Tay Forest Park, this 'away from it all' site is great for wildlife spotters, with red squirrels scampering around the leafy surrounds, the occasional elusive pine marten, and plenty of birdlife on the river. The park has good facilities too: kids' clubs for ages four to 10, a decent-sized indoor pool that runs toddlers' and watersports sessions, crazy golf, all-weather sports courts, arcade games, an adventure playground and a duck pond for a spot of pond dipping. Adults, meanwhile, may well appreciate the sauna and solarium on site, as well as the scenic nature trails and fishing opportunities nearby. Another highlight is a drink or meal on the outdoor patio of the Riverside Bar and Restaurant, which has spectacular views over the River Tummel. In the evenings, the venue livens up with cabaret, competitions and live music. For practicalities, the park has a small shop and a launderette on site.

Local attractions

You could spend several days walking and cycling the tiptop Tay Forest trails around Tummel Valley Holiday Park, taking in the glens, rivers and lochs of Highland Perthshire. Top of most visitors’ list is the awesome vista over Loch Tummel from Queen’s View: cheeky Queen Vicky claimed it was her visit that inspired the viewpoint’s name, but according to the locals, it was actually named after Queen Isabella, the wife of Robert the Bruce, hundreds of years earlier. Three miles north of Pitlochry is a stunning National Trust of Scotland site, the Pass of Killiecrankie, where the plunging river gorge is skirted by a Victorian railway viaduct. Other ideas for day trips include Blair Atholl Castle at the edge of the Cairngorms National Park, an 18th-century beauty whose grounds include a folly-filled walled garden, woodland adventure playground and sculpture trail; the lochside village of Kenmore, where you can visit Scotland’s oldest inn to inspect the poem that Robert Burns carved into the fireplace; and the Fairtrade town of Aberfeldy, home to Dewar’s World of Whisky, perfect for a bit of souvenir shopping.
