  • Two-acre site on the North Coast 500 route for CAMC members only
  • Just off the main A9 trunk road, 10 minutes’ drive from a sandy beach
  • One-acre dog playground on site; a 20-minute walk from the local pub
Soon to be chasing stunning views along the North Coast 500 route through Scotland’s Highlands and Islands? Plan a stop at The Old School House Certificated Location, a site for Caravan and Motorhome Club members only based just off the main A9 trunk road. The pitches are within the two-acre grounds of a restored Victorian school house midway between Tain and Invergordon. Fields and forests make up the scenic backdrop, and despite feeling remote, it’s only a 20-minute walk from a friendly pub serving food, and perhaps most importantly, whisky varieties from local distilleries). Of course, this part of Scotland has a reputation for excellent coastal and mountain scenery, so don't wait too long to visit one of the local sandy beaches. Beaches in Shandwick and Nigg are 10 minutes’ drive away, and the beaches in Portmahomack and Dornoch are between 15 and 20 minutes’ drive away. Already thinking of what you might eat here? There’s a small shop in Milton, five minutes’ drive away, for supplies and the usual range of supermarkets in Tain and Invergordon, which are both 10 minutes’ drive away. If a well-behaved dog is road-tripping with you, good news. The Old School House Certificated Location has gone to great lengths to make sure they’re fully welcomed. It has a fenced one-acre playground with dog toys, communal water bowls and agility challenges. As for other facilities on site, there are individual water taps, general rubbish and recycling bins, wifi, and waste disposal for grey and brown waste (including a drive-over waste disposal for motorhomes to dump grey waste directly). Larger vans can easily access the site, as the wide gates are directly off the A9 and the site is completely flat.

Site is 25 miles north of Inverness and accessed directly off the A9 approximately 2 miles north of Kildary. Pass Shandwick Inn on RHS then turning to Logie Hill and Cemetery on LHS. Just past blue 'P' parking sign on LHS you will see white railings coming into view and then the Caravan and Motorhome Club Site sign on road side followed by Old School House etched into stone. Turn left into entrance and go through the white gates on LHS. The campsite is on the LHS beyond the green shed. If coming from the North, the site is 2 miles south of Tain on the A9. Just after the Nigg roundabout, follow the A9 south and look for electrical substation on LHS and parking layby on RHS. Almost immediately after this you will see Caravan and Motorhome Club sign and entrance to site on RHS. Go through white gates in front of you and campsite is on the LHS beyond the green shed.

Local attractions

If you like the idea of tracking down castles, distilleries and stunning settings for outdoor activities, consider yourself spoilt at The Old School House Certificated Location. Founded in 1843, Glenmorangie Distillery Co (10 minutes’ drive) has a reputation which reaches far beyond the Highlands and Islands. Within a short drive of the site, there are also five castles and miles of forest walks and biking trails. Golfers can get ready for a day out on the golf courses in Tain (10 minutes) and Dornoch (20 minutes). If you have extra time, Tain has museums and galleries, shops, restaurants and a busy local events calendar. The Seaboard villages, known for their historic sites and local folklore, are also scattered over the adjacent peninsula. These include Shandwick (10 minutes), Hilton (10 minutes) and Balintore (10 minutes). Venturing further afield? Black Rock Gorge (20 minutes) was featured in the Harry Potter films and you've likely heard of the Loch Ness (an hour) boat cruises too.
