  • Dog-friendly pods on a spectacular Highlands smallholding with sheep
  • A 155-acre wildlife haven of woodland, moorland and green space
  • Three miles from the local village and 15 minutes' drive to Loch Ness
It’s a given that many (most) places in the Scottish Highlands will be spectacularly pretty places for secluded breaks. Take a look at the pics of Craskie Estate an hour from Inverness to see how true this is here: this lovely park on a Highlands estate and with its own loch is home to stunning scenery you could (should) soak up and wander around for weeks. Craskie is on a remote 155-acre estate, made up of swathes of green space, heather moorland, pine forest and native birch trees… and Loch Craskie (really, see pics). A stretch of the River Cannich runs through the estate too: guests are welcome to fish here for perch and brown trout as long as they pick up a permit from the Craksie team. This is a wildlife haven of some standing too, home to red deer who are spottable around the estate most days, and to otters, pine martens and badgers on the ground and buzzards, wildfowl and an occasion golden eagle overhead. The estate surroundings should keep active holidaymakers nicely occupied, as 14 munros and many smaller peaks are in the area for hill walkers and mountain climbers. Waterside walks and more wildlife watching are close by at other local lochs, and – for possibly a different type of wildlife watching – Loch Ness is accessible half an hour’s drive away at Drumnadrochit. This is a peaceful, remote and blessedly secluded setting, but nearby amenities should sort you out with most of what you’ll need: the local village three miles away has a pub serving food, as well as a post office and general shop: this last is so well stocked it does takeaway pizza too.

Local attractions

The estate’s surrounding area of Glencannich is a wilderness of a place, in a remote setting between the glens of Affric and Strathfarrar, but easily accessed from Inverness about 30 miles away. As well as Loch Craskie, the glen has the 8.6-mile Loch Mullaraoch to meander around – and four munros to tackle for those feeling energetic. Photographers will find this Highlands setting a snappers’ haven, where pic opportunities include the deer lapping at the estate’s loch waters most evenings, or rutting on the other side of the estate fence in October. Taking a triumphant pic atop a Highlands munro is also a popular pick, and any photographer worth their salt will be carting along their kit to Loch Ness too. Wildlife watching, hill climbing, munro bagging… all this, and hiking and mountain biking too. The 44-mile Affric Kintail Way is one of Scotland’s newest and is an excellently scenic one to tackle, running from Drumnadrochit on the shores of Loch Ness to Morvich in Kintail by Loch Duich.
