  • Dog-friendly site 15 minutes' walk from Portpatrick village centre
  • A 15-minute drive from Stranraer; 25 mins from Cairnryan ferries
  • Close to the start of the Southern Upland Way walking trail
For hols with spectacular scenery, lots to do and accommodation that’s welcoming for the whole family, head along to Sunnymeade Caravan Park, a large dog- and family-friendly Dumfries and Galloway site, 15 minutes’ walk (or five minutes’ drive) from the pretty seaside village of Portpatrick. This is a quiet site in scenic countryside, a 15-minute walk from the ruins of Dunskey Castle on cliffs overlooking the Irish Sea. On a good day, Ireland can be clearly seen, so make the most of seaside strolls and drink it in. Lengthier wanders are within easy reach too: Portpatrick is the start of the 212-mile Southern Upland Way. Active types not up for two-legged excursions of that type can opt instead for golf, sea fishing and cycling – all are popular hereabouts, and there’s a golf course within five minutes’ drive (or 20 minutes’ walk) of base. Quieter times can be had with peaceful saunters along the sands of the stunning Killantringan Bay, a beach with its very own waterfalls, overlooked by a lighthouse. Anyone who’s keeping eyes out for festivals should time stays to coincide with Portpatrick’s folk festival or the RNLI lifeboat week. Those more interested in switching off and having some down time, on the other hand, are well catered for on site, where the facilities – a laundry room, a toilet block with showers, and free wifi – have been kept low key to maintain the peaceful vibe.

Local attractions

Energy-filled kids along for the hols? Never fear, there’s lots to do round here: the site’s a 15-minute drive from Agnew Park, an adventure park with boating lake, miniature golf and go-karting, and 50 minutes from Laggan Outdoor where zipwires can be zoomed along, William Tell can be emulated in archery, and Segways can be ridden at speed. A little further afield, visits to Cream o’ Galloway dairy farm (an hour away) come highly recommended for rides, time spent on the adventure playground, and the ever-enticing reward of a pitstop in the ice cream parlour. For a touch of nature, opt instead for saunters around the stately gardens of Castle Kennedy, Glenwhan and the Logan Botanic Garden, all within 25 minutes, or settle in next to the unusual Port Logan Fish Pond (30 minutes) – well worth a quick internet search – to see if anything bites. Be sure, also to explore the nearest town, Stranraer, where a museum and castle are waiting to be explored, and a town trail will take visitors around the sights. If that castle isn’t generating the required Scottish vibes, it’s a 45-minute drive to Bladnoch Distillery for tours and tastings of some lowland single malt.
