  • Small, dog-friendly pop-up site in the Southern Uplands of Scotland
  • Access to the nine-mile Meikledale walk; a 45-minute drive to Carlisle
  • River on site for paddling; 10 minutes’ drive from a pub
Longing to stow yourself away in Scotland’s Southern Uplands for a while? You’ll have plenty of time for walking, recharging and other simple pleasures at Bush of Ewes. This dog-friendly pop-up site is set in a walkers’ haven, right at the start of the nine-mile Meikledale walk. Other hiking areas in the vicinity include the prehistoric trail at Loch Hill (five minutes’ drive) and the Langholm Hills (10 minutes). Rise and shine, fry an egg over the firepit and then take yourself for a little paddle in the river to really wake yourself up. Birds and other wildlife are frequent visitors at this peaceful site, so keep an eye out as you go along. You might want to track down a Scottish castle or make your way to Carlisle (45 minutes) for a spot of sightseeing. The Lake District National Park is around an hour’s drive away too, if you fancy a day out by the lakes. The site sits on the A7, so getting about will be easy, and you won’t necessarily have to rely on your car, either, since there’s a bus stop right outside. The 95 bus goes to Langholm village (10 minutes), where there’s a small shop, a fishing lake and a pub/restaurant. Further out, Hawick (25 minutes) has a golf course, leisure centre, shops and local museum, while Canonbie (20 minutes) has a cinema and pretty stretch along the River Esk.

Electric grass pitch

Liked: Quiet location Near river Field for dogs Able to have campfires and wood for sale We were aware of the basic facilities and accepted this before going

Disliked: Too near a main for some pitches Dad to see motorhomes getting stuck in the mud Staff attitude a bit too challenging in their approach Nothing to do in immediate area

Recommend to friends Visit again

From the manager: Really sorry you where not happy with your stay, we are working on inputting a shower for the near future, the motorhomes where getting stuck as they where on a grass pitch and we have recently had alot of rain but us as site owners where there getting them out. We did everything you asked us to as soon as we where asked the only time you where approached about anything was when you left a gate open where 8 sheep where grazing which could have easily got out onto the main road we also had to ask you put your dog on a lead as she was off multiple times barking at passing customers not in the secure field where we explained she could be left off and run round.

Electric grass pitch

Liked: What a beautiful site. Great location to break a journey. The pitches are great and what a view. We were only here for 1 night but what a find we will be back. So friendly so we wish them all the best. A bonus was a walk by the river and a fuss from very friendly lambs.

Disliked: No showers but we knew about this and hopefully they will be done for our next visit

Non-electric grass tent or trailer tent pitch

Liked: Easy to find, basic but everything I needed, friendly staff, lambs and chickens running around, next to the river, level grass pitches, good value for money, good phone signal. Really enjoyed my stay, especially as a female lone traveller, would definitely stay again!

Disliked: No showers but that wasn't a problem for me as I was only there for one night.

Non-electric grass tent or trailer tent pitch

Liked: Amazing scenery, lovely level, well tended pitches. Chicken and sheep in a field on site would keep younger children amused for hours Toilets were brick built, well kept and clean with hot water. Lovely deep hand basins so washing was quite easy.

Disliked: The A7 was very close and there was a lot of traffic noise, possibly because of the amount of rain over our stay.

Local attractions

The city of Carlisle (45 minutes’ drive) has a well-preserved castle that must have seen some serious action during its centuries-old life in this border city. Other attractions include a stretch of Hadrian’s Wall and a medieval cathedral. After all that sightseeing, take a rest in one of several green areas along the River Eden. For outdoor activities such as watersports, cycling and horseriding, you can make a beeline for Kielder Water and Forest Park (50 minutes). There are also wooded walks, plus stargazing events organised by Kielder Observatory and birdwatching (ospreys nest here). At the Solway Coast Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (about an hour), you can admire the mudflats in the Inner Solway Firth, stretch out on the sand dunes at Mawbray Banks or check out the boggy pools at Drumburgh Moss, which are visited by curlews, geese and skylarks, depending on the time of year.
